I want to buy a PS3 for my boyfriend for his birthday next month. Have tried doing a bit of research on the net but am just getting more confused to be honest. Can anyone tell me the following?

Is 40MB the standard size or should I be looking for bigger?
Can PS2 games be played on it?
What do I need to get in the package? I see people mentioning a 6 axis controller? Do I need this? is there not a controller in it?
Where is the best place to get it. I want to get one with a few games included, Assassin in particular he's been raving about.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it because as you can tell from my questions I haven't a clue and really don't want to spend all that money and for it to be wrong.
    Ta, folks ;)

    Hi shoppergal,

Man, i wish you were my girlfriend :p

The current model is the 40Gb, there was a 60 Gb version but that is not being sold anymore. PS2 game's cant be played on the current model. The six axis controller comes with it so no need to worry about that. You get everything you need in the box. You can get an extra six axis controller if he will be playing it with some mates though as you only get one with it.

Just make sure to keep the receipt and if anythings amis you can get it sorted.

You might want to pick up a HDMI cable to connect it to a TV also. The console comes with other leads to connect to normal TVs so it is not an essential. Only worth it if he has a HD TV. They're quite cheap to buy just make sure not to pay more than €30- Tesco sell them cheaper, avoid Sony Centre and the like.

Woah, back up a second there - I was planning on getting my boyfriend a PS3 too, but can you really not play PS2 games on them? Cos he has lots of PS2 games that he loves so it would probably be pretty pointless to buy a new console that he'd have to buy all new games for...

The older 60 gig model have backwards compatability with the PS1 and PS2
The, now, standard 40 gig model has lost the PS2 functionallity

If thats the case why bother buying him a console at all?

If he is happy with his ps2?

He can always keep the ps2 that he has if he ever wants to play any of the old games.

It looks like a great console and I know he'd like it - but it would just make more sense if he was still able to play his old games as well as getting good new ones for it. Twould seem a bit silly to have to be moving between the two consoles all the time.

Maybe he's just playing them since he doesnt have anything else to play?

Any fella would happily throw there PS2 in the bin if they got a PS3

thanks everyone, feel much better informed now :) have rang around a few places and game looks like it's offering the best bundle at the mo so think i'll get that on saturday.

i'm fully resigned to him being slumped in front of the couch for about a month after we get it but ah well, we all have our little "things" don't we. Right, I'm off to watch TV while I can still get near it.

    Thanks again ;)

No they wouldnt. Why throw out one of the best consoles ever made, with the biggest choice of fantastic titles ever? Especially when you cant now play them on the PS3.

That's who said it. I bought a 60Gb but only as a tradeup of my ps2. If i hadn't been able to keep playing my old ps2 games, it wasn't going to be bought. The cost of building up from scratch a ps3 games library is quite high, and there's very little presently in the line of 'must have' games. No MGS4 and no GTA4.

I got a PS3 in HMV. Had two games, assassins creed and burnout something or other. also had two dvd's and a hdmi cable. 470. not bad i think. did look around and it seemed the best deal so am happy with it.

thanks everyone for your help. hope he'll like it now :)
