    Anyone tried this yet?
Obviously there is a problem in that people are going to sell tv services from the US networks and all that which possibly cannot be discussed here... but to get around all the nonsence lets work with the example that you have the box connected to your local tv stream.. so you guys that means rte and tv3 ya...

so now you can log in anywhere in the world and view these channels... or even tell your great aunty norah in timbuk2 how she can keep up with corrie..

    thoughts anyone?
    bandwidth? quality etc?

Used it once to watch Detroit Cable TV, it's grand.

I presume you would need a really fast upload speed for this to work effectively ?
256kb/s surely wouldnt be able to stream tv.

Depends on the quality, not HiDef for sure. You can buffer at the far end & get "nearly real time TV".

You can make your own "slingbox" with a TV card & free SW, & I'm not talking about MythTV (which is great, but may be overkill for most people).

What's the legal position on using a slingbox?

I have a Slingbox and have it hooked up to my Sky box allowing me to watch TV wherever I have the software installed....work. :D My connection has an upload speed of 256 so the pic is ok. Not great but fine if you want to see Soccer AM on a quiet Saturday morning in work.

It does however give an excellent picture over the home network.

you can get LOADS of products that do this. A €40 TV /video capture card and free MS WME or 3rd party VLC or Unreal Server will do all a Slingbox does and more.
Philips, Dlink, Apple etc have solutions too.

You need at least 256k upload speed for good quality 320x240 resolution. At least 3Mbps is needed for full TV quality.

    100kbps will give youtube quality.

If you have 3G/Wifi phone you can create a custom PC profile to stream MP£ an/or video to that from Home. One off the shelf solution for that is Orb. There is a Mobile Slingbox client too.

Basically there is nothing cheap or special about Slingbox if you have a PC.

The main thing is a good upload speed and high cap.

    thank you.

i've used vlc from a dreambox before to steam cable tv from home to the office so i guess it's the same thing.

possibly all the hype is coming from the proximity side of things, the side i said i wouldnt talk about.

    Thank you for the input.

Breaks Sky T&C for payTV channels to stream Sky content outside your house. They can legally cancel your viewing card.

Other than that there is no issue as it is for personal 1:1 use. Not a WebTV portal.
