DELL Desktop: DVD writer giving trouble. Help!

Just today, my one year old DVD writer on my DELL desktop has started acting up.

I am a photographer and I use it a lot.

Today it has started, randomly, not ejecting the DVD at the end. When I try to close the program, nothing happens. Equally, when I try to eject the DVD manually using the button on the tower, I can't. I have to shut down the computer and restart. When I do, I can eject the DVD.

Then, even though the DVD is burned, I can't read it. If I put it in the tray and open Photoshop and try to browse to it, Photoshop can't "see" it.

Is this my computer or the program I am using to burn the DVDs? I only started using this program (CDBurnerXP) a couple of months back.

Any ideas?

Does the drive still read previously burned projects that you know have worked on that drive ok in the past ?
Sounds like it could be incompatible media - even if you use the same brand all the time you may get a batch that was made with a different dye . Most DVD-writers are quirky to at least a small degree (mine is incredibly fussy these days!) . Try different brands of DVD (and/or instal a 2nd writer - they're cheap enough these days) .

Also the manufacturer's website should have a media compatibility list recommending specific brands for your drive . While there check for firmware updates ...

1. I use Automatic Updates. Would the DVD burner be getting any updates it required, or should I try to update it manually anyway? If so, how do I do this? i.e. Where can I find the DVD burner's software? (by the way, I'm using CDBurner XP.)

2. Where can I find out the make of the DVD burner that's installed on my computer?
