    Thinking of upfrading my monitor.
Currently I use a 4:3 Trinitron (CRT) at high res.

Does anyone know if a 16:9 widescreen format gives better perifferal vision to the shooter over the standard 4:3 format?
i.e can you actually see more in the horizontal?

Well I would think that the wider the screen, the less you see horizontally actually!

I play on a 20" widescreen in 16:10 aspect ratio and I love it. But it took some getting used to! Had a 17" CRT before that and I struggled for a few weeks at the start! Now I'm fine, used to it... But I definitely wouldn't say I see better horizontally!

Perhaps I should rephrase my question, i appriciate that the wider screen makes it harded to see both sides at once.

But I was wondering if the wide screen format actually displayed more information, e.g. when you look at a street scene is there more of the street shown in widescreen format, or is it the same view of the street with just the top and bottom chopped off ? Or is it just streched.

What I getting at here is the need to look left and right when entering a room (checking for the enemy), does a widescreen require less "left and right", see what I mean.......

I think I see exactly the same as somebody playing on a normal 4:3 monitor. I select aspect ratio = 16:10 otherwise the image is stretched on my widescreen monitor. However I'm pretty sure I see the same as you!
