Credit card companies giving out age info

    Just sort of a quick question, is it legal for a credit card company to give out your age when you purchase a product online...or would this breach any data protection acts? Or is this done at the moment anyway?

    For example, could a site somehow try and verify your exact age by getting the information from your credit card when you go to purchase a product?

    I know of one site that may be implementing this, and I thought it was a tad bit odd.

    No that is illegal under the data protection act, assuming the EU data protection act is in force in the countries where the credit card company resides.

    Can you provide the site you are referring to?
    someone told me that some adult sites have age verification partners which I always just thought would check if your credit card was valid and therefore you are over 18 cos you have to be over 18 to have a credit card in your own name?

    It is actually www.steampowered.com , a site which you can buy games from. At this stage it is only a rumour. I assume if it was implemented it would be for over 18's games.

    You need to be over 18 to have a credit card so maybe by proving you have a credit card proves that you are over 18 and can purchase 18+ rated games??

    Anyone in possession of a valid credit card is over 18, so that should be enough for them. I don't think any credit card company would provide the exact DOB for one of their customers, regardless of what the website tries to do. A credit card company will simply deny them this information, if they can even request it from them.
