Come on, Watty, RTE and BBC are not the norm on SD SKY. Most of the channels are lower resolution, even Sky One. So don't be pushing the 2 top SD bitrate satellite channels as the norm for the service.

Put it this way, ALL of the channels I've seen are as clear as RTE and BBC on Satellite. I only had 10 or 15 minutes to mess about with it but didn't see any artifacts, distortions, freezes. Channel changes took a few seconds but that is understandable on IPTV. Having said that, I don't know if the average Joe would put up with such a delay when changing channels.

Where would Smart get the channels from? I would have thought satellite.

I'm a Smart Broadband customer and still stuck on the 14 or so channels on basic cable so I would think this would be pretty cool to try out. (Is this free?)

However, I've only got the 4Mbps, do you really need 8Mbps plus?

Mail sent, but I'd be grateful if anyone could enlighten me about the above.

I have no idea and didn't think to ask. If I find out, I'll let you know.

Might be getting an iptv box today*.... WooHoo :)

*This is because I know a few top guys in there. I have no idea when the actual trial is starting for Boardsies.

I persume you're on the 4 M package. The 8 M refers to the capacity of your line so Smart will have a look at your line and see what its capable of. I believe the requirement will be less than 8M due to the equipment that Smart have purchased.
Don't panic untill they have a look at your line.

I think you will be good with a 4Mb connection.

IIRC when Magnet was testing there IPTV they were providing a ~24Mb line with QoS Router splitting off ~8Mb for internet and the rest was IPTV & VoIP.
But they were also running stream with MPEG2 at the time and I think they implemented better compression since then.

I do not think it's any surprise that Smart are moving to MPEG4. A 4Mb connection should be more than sufficient for IPTV but I doubt you will get more than one stream while doing any heavy down/up loading.

No idea how QOS is done. At least I *HOPE* that there is QOS on the TV side.

I hope so, because I was with Smart when they gave the free 3Mb upgrade but as far as I remember my speed only increased a little so I presume my line cannot handle more.
My father seemed to get the full 6Mb though, maybe I'll get him on this too, as he's an occasional boardsie.

With 8Mbps you will get 1 to 3Mbps data, even with MPEG4 (unless the quality is low). That's why I said that a 8Mbps line is minimum realistic speed. I've done MPEG4 on 512kbps and it's much better than YouTube and even some old VHS, but pretty poor. Only 320x240. Decent TV needs 720x576. That's nearly 5 times = 2.5Mbps. Double bitrate again for passable quality = 5Mbps. To match decent channels on Satellite you will peak at 6Mbps though average could be 3Mbps. HD needs 18Mbps. Don't expect HD unless you on 25Mbps+ VDSL or fibre.

BTW will this be free? How will it affect our existing Sky+ set-up? I only have a Aolink DR814 router, will I have to run a cable from it to the TV? What channels will we be able get? So many questions!!!

I don't have all the answers:) and I am sure all questions will be answered before the the trials begin.

Regarding costs, My understanding is that it is free for 3 months, (hardware and channels), if you wish to continue the service after the trial there will be a charge. I believe the package is self install so no install charge there either.

Smart expect to get regular feedback from the trialists, which seems reasonable imo:)

Do not hold me to the above as its not out trial, its just my understanding, Smart will confirm in advance.

FYI I have sent mails to all for lines passed, lines failed (or service not available yet) and to a few who could not be identified as Smart customers requesting confirmation.

    Spider;

We are more them likely to get a new router (with better QoS support) and a separate box to connect to the TV (like your current Sky+ Box) ; the only issue with it interfering with your Sky+ box is if you do not have a spare SCART or RGB connection on your TV but you can get a switch box for ~10€.

On the channel side they are looking at ~100 channel and also on-demand but I don't think we will get "all" of them during the trial due to them wanting to make sure the IPTV Box, QoS (both on their Internat & on are home networks) and the like works Ok on the trail with a small number of people before signed an licensing deals.

The investment in Smart's IPTV (Internet Protocol television) will allow the telco to offer digital services of over 100 television and radio channels to 550,000 homes in Ireland. IPTV is a means of providing television services through a broadband internet connection.

Smart already offer a package like this called smart vision its only available in certain buildings that are pre wired and i heard they were having issue with it, but in saying that i think they are really pushing the bb market in Ireland everyone else is just re selling Eircoms packages in some way or form as they are all using eircom`s exchange equipment and so on .

I have always liked smart because they make the rest of the market try and keep up with there speed offers there no down load limits and so on and for all there problems in the past at least there trying to offer us what we want one media platform and one bill lol
lets hope its a small one
