    That's a 64-machine, isn't it?

If so, try the generic AMD/Intel x64 image: http://ie.releases.ubuntu.com/gutsy/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso

If that doesn't go so well, try the 32-bit image: http://ie.releases.ubuntu.com/gutsy/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso

How to install Ubuntu Gutsy on a MacBook

the last link i posted would have lead you to the above link. What you need to run it will depend on your macbook.
The instructions (from link) refer to Apple's BootCamp application which is no longer publicly available unless you use / upgrade to OSX 10.5 Leopard. Another options are to resize OSX partition using diskutil or re-install OSX from scratch and use Disk Utility to make a smaller Mac OS X partition, leaving free space for Ubuntu.

You don't need Boot Camp to dual boot Linux and OSX. You do need Refit and you can downsize your Mac partition using Mac tools. There should be loads of how-tos about for whichever distro takes your fancy. Boot Camp mainly provides drivers for Windows, Linux will come with drivers (the only one I had to download was madwifi.)

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.
