Did you guys know that the Star Spangled Banner doesn't feature the word 'America'; even once?

    Yeah, it's about the flag.

The Finnish and Estonian anthems use the same music, too.

    French one is best, IMO.

The Italian one is the best!

Reminds me of all those Schumi F1 victories with Ferrari over the years.

    :D

They're all pretty crap to be honest.

I think we should adopt Eye of the Tiger.

    Think about it.................

well i know im not the only one who feels like this because i remember about a year and a bit ago myself and some mates where boozing on saturday morning for the match (still drinking from friday) Anyway when irelands call came on i didnt notice what it was so i started with Sinne Fianna Fáil then realised that was not was being sung so i started asking questions (i forgot to add i had a badley burnt hand wrapped in a towel full of ice that the barman gave me because i got in a fight with a geroge forman the night before trying to cook bacon at about 5am)

Anyway long story short i only noticed just over 2 years ago that the rugby team didnt sing the national anthom and when we where talking about it allot of people in the pub agreed. I dont know why i have a problem with irelands call, i dont see why we have different football teams but the same rugby team, one would assume it would be the other way around, more irish people would play rugby than football, im sure most people play it at one time or another but if im right more people would play more rugby. i know the english football leage is popular but im not talking about being fans of forign clubs, i just think there are good rugby players in the rep of ireland and i dont know about the north but i think im right if i where to state that both football teams are either bad or badley managed. So maybe a combined football team might make more sence so we might have some chance but combined rugby? where we not ranked 4th best rugby team in the world? sure before the cup the ods where quite bad meaning bookies thought we had a good chance of winning. Ok let me put it another way. If a irish team wins a international event it had better of been Sinne Fianna Fáil before the game, winning to irelands call would be... well i dont even know what word to use.

The French are red-hot with their anthem.

The British one is very mundane, but I think that it is very useful for emptying cinemas, same affect as a fire alarm. There was never a soul left inside one by the time it got to the third verse.

My favourite anthem is Darth Vader's. Quality tune.

As for National Anthems, I always liked the national anthem of Finland/Estonia.

And the Soviet one was great.

    And the German.

    Deutchland Deutchland Uber Alles indeed.

The Spanish! Their national anthem has no words. Which, come to think of it could solve all the Ireland's Call hassle. We should just hum all national anthems.

I think I feel a letter to the Irish Times coming on.

(And it's countries not "contries", don't not "dont", their not "their", anthem not "anthom", and a capital letter after a full stop.)

Sorry Unshelved but...... The Spanish national anthem does in fact have words - they;re pretty fascist though which is why they're not sung. The first line roughly translated goes "Long live spain, raise your arms children of the spanish nation"

A great tune none the less. My personal favourite, like many others, is the Italian one

    My favourites:
    La Marseillaise
O Canada, although the French version is better than the English version IMO.
    Soviet anthem
    Italy's anthem
The Star Spangled banner when it's sung properly (i.e. not by American Idol rejects who spend 10 minutes elongating each syllable).

Gotta give respect to the anthem of the Armenian S.S.R though. Cracking tune:

Irish anthem hands down, gives me goose bumps every time it gets to the end, I get all fired up and want to throw a stool in over the bar and start a fight.

    Sinne Fianna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,
    buoo dár sluuuuaaa
    Thar Naaah do nuuna naaa,
    Laa dee doo daa daa.
    Shnaa do de do doo
    laaa fe do de dooo
    mmmm mmmmm daaaaahh

O Canada is also a classic, purely for comical value..

We should adopt Radiohead's National Anthem. That's a good song.

They introduced words under Franco and dropped them when he croaked - the lyrics aren't officially recognised any longer. In fact, Spain passed a law in 1997 stating, among other things, that it should be played the key of b minor, it is to last 52 seconds in the presence of the king and slightly shorter every other time, and that it is to have no words.

The South African anthem, Nkosi Sikelel i'Afrika is one of the best, IMO. When it's sung by thousands the hairs really stand up on the back of your neck. Here's a long, and very cool, version of it.

I love this version from 80s . Has to be one of the most beautiful peices of instrumental music ever written ,lovley orchestral score and still has the power to make hairs on back of my neck stand up . :)
