Smart Telecom are looking for 50 boards.ie users to go on their latest IPTV trail.

To be eligible you must have a Smart Telecom Broadband connection and at least one TV.

Please send the following information to iptvtrial@boards.ie

    Phone number
Location of phone line in residence
Location of all TV to be served.

The location of the phone line and tvs are required to determine the best way to get the signal to the box.

If we can get the required number to trial the service, we will set up a forum to discuss and share information on the trial.

If you could post on the therad here also if you have mailed, will double check to make sure no one has missed an opportunity.

I sent a mail in - would be interested but have one or two questions about what effect this would have on current contracts with other providers.

I am pretty sure you must have smart broadband to be on the trial and will double check that point for you.

I have Smart broadband myself, and a TV ideally situated near the router and PC.

However, as I'll be moving soon, there's little point in me applying.

    I'll sticky this thread.

This might seem like a silly question but is this available to Smartvision customers or is our service already IPTV?

does not reflect well on smart that there is a typo error on the ad.

True IPTV service usually uses a dedicated Set Box. Not the same as Internet or Web TV.

You do need to be Smart Telecom Broadband customer, probably with at least 8Mbps plus for this trial.

IPTV (unless on fibre) does not generally support multiroom or HD. Unless there is a large Video on Demand catalogue, it's inherently poorer than Satellite and good cable services (UPC is still upgrading... when they are done they will have Broacast TV superior to IPTV and also IPTV/VOD via the broadband part of their service).

I know the difference but I'm hoping you can stream from the IPTV box like you can do with both devices.

Up until yesterday I would have agreed with pretty much everything you have said about IPTV in the past. However, I had a chance to see it in action. It blew me away, and it will blow you away when you see it.

I don't want to jeapordise my possible trial by giving any details and not sure if there will be an NDA or anything until this trial is over. But from what I could see, nobody is doing this yet and looks far supiorior to at least SD Sky Satallite. Not to mention the other stuff.

If it is PERFECTLY done it can only match RTE & BBC on Satellite. It can't exceed it.

On Satellite I can feed 16 receivers with 3500 channels. No VOD though. I only have 7 receivers connected today now (3 are dual tuner PVRs)

I'm a Smart Broadband customer and still stuck on the 14 or so channels on basic cable so I would think this would be pretty cool to try out. (Is this free?)

However, I've only got the 4Mbps, do you really need 8Mbps plus?

Come on, Watty, RTE and BBC are not the norm on SD SKY. Most of the channels are lower resolution, even Sky One. So don't be pushing the 2 top SD bitrate satellite channels as the norm for the service.

Put it this way, ALL of the channels I've seen are as clear as RTE and BBC on Satellite. I only had 10 or 15 minutes to mess about with it but didn't see any artifacts, distortions, freezes. Channel changes took a few seconds but that is understandable on IPTV. Having said that, I don't know if the average Joe would put up with such a delay when changing channels.
