FAI Cup Final - Cork City Vs Longford Town

Well, the final is upon us - this Sunday, Decmeber 2nd.

Longford will have Gary Deegan suspended and City will have Neale Horgan suspended. City are the overwhelming favourites to win the cup for the first time in 9 years, but write off Longford at your peril. Their cup form should have them the tag as cup specialists as they have only lost 3 cup games under Alan Matthews, and that includes 3 finals, two of which were won.

Tickets sales are supposedly slow enough, but that is not too surprising given the timing of the game, 3 weeks after the season has ended.

Hopefully a good game, and hopefully a comfortable City win.

Prediction: Cork City 1 - 3 Longford Town

    What play offs are left?

    Promotion/Relegation was decided on Friday.

    Derry are in the Setanta?

    What else is there?

    No chance.
I agree, I think Cork City will win, quite comfortably.

    Any neutrals going?

    I'm heading along myself.

    .

I meant that there wasnt three weeks between the end of the season and the cup final. There was a week. Badly put by me.

there was a big thing on in south africa which everyone in the fai simply HAD to attend yesterday, which is why the final wasnt on yesterday, nothing to do with play offs..

City simply have to win this and i reckon we will. 2-0. Here's hoping the side that turned up in dalymount park for the semi turn up on sunday..

Or the fact that the RDS was unavailable. Whichever suits your agenda really....

A week after the season ends and not clashing with the world cup draw and Platini in attendance. How dare the FAI.

Even though i know you are on a wind up, I would like to ask one question - if Rovers were in the cup final, and there was a 3 week gap between their last game of the season, would you be happy about it? The players have 2 weeks less holidays, a part time club like Longford have 3 weeks more outgoings for paying players and staff etc.

Its a ridiculous situation. The cup final should have been the weekend Nov 16th. End of story.

Who is on a wind up? The league campaign ended on Friday, the cup final is traditionally after this. Last weekend (the ideal date IMO) the venue was unavalable. Also senior FAI reps were needed at the WC draw. This weekend is the nearest available one and 8 days after the close of the league is not actually all that unreasonable.

Would I be happy? The gap isn't three weeks since the league ended, so unless you are arguing that the playoffs should be eliminated or the FAI cup final not the final game of the season, I dont see what the actual issue is here. If clubs had a problem with the date of the cup final, May was when these concerns should have been raised.

There are plenty of things to have a go at the FAI over, and this is not one of them.

Here is the Original Fixture list, as issued to me, by the FAI, at the beginning of the season.

    http://www.mediafire.com/?auein3d2ndi

It plainly has the Cup Final penciled in for the 25th November 2007.

Now, it wouldn't have taken a genius in the FAI to either

    a. book the RDS for that date, well in advance.
    b. enquire about a booking, then when told it is unavailable, put the new date on the original fixture list.
    c. Find a suitable venue for that date.

Instead, they leave it to a few weeks before the scheduled date to tell the clubs.

    Then the money fiasco too.

The FAI are squarely to blame here.

:confused: so a comfortable win for city is them losing:confused::confused:

im gonna back the town on this one, they're cup specialists and i think the players will want to pull off one big last effort to give the board the two fingers before going off to they're new clubs (either that or they don't want to win the club prize money and stuff and wont give a crap!)

He said he hopes City will win, but predicts they will lose.

I said we City should win comfortably, afterall City have beaten Longford 3 times so far this season, but I think City will bottle it something huge on Sunday and Longford will win the cup.

At least thats what I meant.

Deegan is a huge huge huge loss for Longford as his replacement is Cup Tied.

Might get the old boots out and resume my commanding roll in the centre of midfield :D

FFS they tried a and did b des.

c isnt an option at the moment with Tolka in the state it is.

and clubs knew about this a lot more recently than 'a few weeks ago'.

another storm in a tea cup cheap shot at the FAI who havent actually done anything wrong here.

Yes no shame on the FAI that they have no stadium of their own or even a back up that could hold a national final.

Name one other Football association that owns their own ground?

I think he meant a stadium to call a home, like Lansdowne always was, like Wembley to England, Scotland to Hampden Park, etc...

Landsdowne was since the late 80's. Wembley is a rugby league stadium and Hampden is Queens Parks ground. Nothing to do with the FA or SFA.

You cant blame the FAI because Shels and Bohs have let their stadia fall to below health and safety requirements and the GAA are up to dirty tricks in Tallaght.

Who do people think will win?

A reproduction of the semi final performance will do for me.

    my probable team for final

    Devine

    Kelly---Kelly---Murray
    Woods

    Leon
    McSweeney--Gamble---healy----Kearney

    ----O'Flynn
    Behan

the SFA have offices in Hampden but the Stadium is owned, operated and used every 2 weeks by QPFC.

Wembly was home to rugby before football and is owned by a plc.

Most other countries use club stadia, like the FAI did until Bohs gave up on Dalyer and let it fall to pieces.

Its more complicated than the FAI not having built a ground, there are sod all facilities in Dublin suitable for a crowd of more than a few thousand full stop. Thats a broader issue that is being dealt with by clubs in conjunction with the FAI.

Kelly is barely good enough for one position, much less two in one game ;o).

I think you mean Lordan centre half with Sean Kelly right full? If so, I agree with that team. Unfortunately Farrelly will start even if everyone is fully fit.

Kearney and o Flynn are both injury concerns and will struggle to make it according to todays news.

Apologies, the current Wembley is owned by a company controlled by the FA. The old Wembley was not.

Thats the only example I can think of.

    Are you sure about Wembley?

Queens park do indeed own Hampden Pk, as I amended in my edit, but the SFA have pumped millions into that ground. They have the stadium on a 20 year lease since 2000 with an option for a further 20 years. So, to say they have nothing to do with Hampden Pk is wrong.

I didn't. I just said they dont own it.

All I'm trying to say is that very few associations own any stadia and the FAI are no different. The lack of 10,000+ stadia in Dublin is as much an indictment of the Gah and Rugby as it is the LoI clubs.
