Routing sound output through monitor instead of speakers

Hi, I think this is probably a very simple thing but cannot find in FAQs so here goes. I have an oldish Dell Dimension 2300 and recently replaced my massive monitor with a Samsung SyncMaster 510 MP LCD that had been using as a TV. My question is how do I route the sound through the monitor rather than through my (equally massive) Dell(Harman/Kardon) speakers? I'd like to get rid of as much as possible from my desk.
    thanks in advance!

    Hi seesee,
Not familiar with this model but, does the monitor have any phono input sockets?(a red and white one)?
If so you could use a stereo mini jack(3.5mm) to stereo phono lead.
If not, what inputs/outputs are on it?

Yes it has the red and white inputs. Can I get one of these jacks in any shop like Dixons or even Marx computers or somewhere like that? thanks

I finally got the jack and connected it up but sound not coming through. I guess I need to change some setting somewhere in the control panel to route the sound via the monitor but I am not sure where. Anyone able to help me?
    thanks in advance

Does the monitor itself have built in speakers?

If so then all you need to make sure you have done is that the volume is turned up on both the computer and the monitor. Also make sure that you have plugged the 3.5mm jack into the correct socket, speaker instead of microphone in. Easy enough mistake to make.

I plugged the jack into the right place alright, where I took the old speakers from. And have volume on and everything. But under audio devices in the control panel it says soundmax digital audio so I think I need to change something but don't know how. I've tried to add new hardware and a few other things I know about but nothing...

    Hi Seesee,

I'm by no means an expert, but have to tried going in to "Control Panel" and then "Sounds and Audio Devices"? In there you'll find a tab called "Audio" and there is a setting for "sound playback" and "default device", that you'll have to change to the monitor setting.
    Hope that helps...
