It depends entirely on your ability with your subjects. Some people might need to study that much to do well, others are lucky in that they don't have to.
Personally, I definitely didn't study that much (hell I don't study that much now and I'm in 6th year)... got 8 As 2 Bs (frickin CSPE like, how embarrassing).. but it depends entirely on the individual etcetera!

Really depends on what kind of student you are and what you're aiming for.

Though, at this time of year even if you're an average student aiming for all As, three hours is a bit over the top in my opinion.

One hour is plenty, even coming up to exams.

yeh, at most now, just be goin back over spme pf the "heavy" subjects like history or something where there is alot to go through, other than that, do your homework well and listen in class, you should be fine then, do a bit before the mocks and a bit after, then after easter up it, there is a really long gap between easter and summer this year so you should be well set up.

Completely agree, really depends on the type of student, how much attention you pay in class and over the last 2 years. I didn't study until 3 days before the exams and got 4 A's, 5 B's and a C, but i wouldn't be recommending that for anyone. It's really down to you and how much you think you need to do.

listen! dont bother with any of that 3 hour bull.. do your homework, written and learning, do exam questions in any subjects where teachers arn't covering them..i found exam papers great for revision.. after that dont over stress yourself.. :)

    worked for mee, got 6 a's 3 b's..

Three hours study for Junior Cert would be ridiculous, especially at this stage. An hour and a half would be plenty IMO.

it's not the length of time that you should be worried about, it's the amount of study material.

Homework in my opinion is study if done properly.

1 hour and a half at most
If your doing your homework and well in class tests you'll be fine.

Yeah I'm going to be doing my J.C this year and by what you all are saying, what my friends are saying and what I think personally the J.C is made hard by the teachers, not the papers themselves.

The best thing to do is do all of your homework when required. This will be very beneficial. Also, get the exam papers for each subject, if you haven't already and become familiar with the types of questions you may be asked and the layout of the papers. Practise makes perfect! Also become familiar with the marking scheme, knowing what questions to spend more time on etc., also write up notes if you need to. All the best.

In my school adn I'm sure it was the smae in most places most people didint study till a few weeks before the pre's and then for the actual JC people didint study til either the week before or the Night before.

In all fairness there no real pressure with the JC,I can rember feeling like this when I was doing it.Dont do anything over 40 mins everyday when your not near exams, only look over what you did for like 5min and try and retain.

Depends on the type of student you are. I'd say an hour tops. Having said that, I didn't do a tap for my Junior Cert and I went up at least 1 full grade in the Junior Cert compared to my Mocks.

Its different for each person how long to study for. I think the best way is to work all the way throught the year- do an hour or 45 mins after you're homework. or say your teacher gives you homework on one chapter- well study that particular chapter.
People will tell you to do 3 hours or 2 hours a night form the 1st of September but realistically you're never going to do that. I ended up just putting it off and then cramming like crazy coming up to the mocks

Coming up to exams I would study for good few hours a night. Its best to study in blocks of 40/50 mins (thats what worked for me before i drifted off) I used to set the alarm pon my phone for 40 mins and I wouldn't stop until the alarm went off and then I would have a 10 minute break- it really stopped me form going crazy and burning out!

    I didn't do a jot and I got 6 As 2 Bs and 2 Cs.

All that bull they feed you about the JC being important, don't listen to a word of it. Two weeks after you get your results you won't give a toss about them.

Edit: also the mocks are not a reliable indicator of your final grade.

Don't recall studying much until midterm(feb), cos my mocks were the next week. Can remember staying in my aunts and sitting up in that bedroom doing 2 hours of study then break, another two hours, break...
After the mocks, i think i did like an hour, maybe more a night. But homework took up a lot of time, and a lot of the teachers gave "learn" homework rather than practical.
    I ended up with 2 a's, 6 b's and 3 c's. All higher.

I went to supervised study everyday for three hours a day and did abseloutely nothing all year and I got 3As 4Bs and 4Cs, Im sure if I had worked a bit I could have done better, but what's the point? Its only the JC

3 hours? hahaha lol im doing my junior cert this year and i just finsihed my mocks and it is not that hard at all. i never study to be honest im a crammer and thats the only way i do well, even the smartest people in my year who get As like everyday only study for mabey 2 hours a week.. thats 2 hours more than i do lol
but for subjects like history id recoment reading over mabey a chapter a week or so just reading mabey a few pages a day and that little bit will make a difference and make sure you learn your french/german (or what ever language you do) vocab when you are given it but for the rest i wouldnt worry

My parents say I should do like 8 hours a day because the teachers said I'm lazy in my pt meeting and have the mocks next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

8 hours a day = massive, massive overkill.

So should I say anything to my parents. I mean could this have any negative affects on me, and if I do say something how should i go about it.

This board isn't exactly a manual for how to deal with your parents, but I would advise if you're going to talk to them about it (which I certainly would, 8 hours is insane), do it calmly and reasonably. If you come across logical and mature, things tend to go well.
