Fundamentals of building design

Can anyone recommend a site/book/anything that could give me an insight of the basic principles and design methods for structures? I'm doing a few group projects at the moment involving very basic preliminary design but I don't really understand a lot of the stuff involved like what type of material and framing to choose, where to locate shear walls, how slabs are connected to a steel frame, how long spans can be achieved etc.

We've never really been taught any of this but they just sort of expect us to know all about it for some reason.

Best book I ever bought in 1st year. Still a handy reference at times 5yrs after graduation. Some of the structural boyos I work with refer to the "blue book" for back-of-a-fag-packet calcs but I'm not sure what it is.

Concrete designers manual and steel designers manual are good as well.

I always thought the steel tables was the blue book?

This one is a wee A5 size handbook - could well be the concrete designers manual or similar.

There is a series of books blue book etc that goes with BS 5095 (or what ever the steel design one is) and there the ones I'm talking about
