I concentrate on the storys. Thats the issue. What accent are you expecting to hear? Do you want a Boston accent reporting on a Cork issue?

My father in law (a good Co Limerick man) pronounces it as "comma tee".

Can't stand Aine Lawlor and don't listen to Morning Ireland when she is on.
I don't like her informal approach as in having a little chat with the sports/business presenter before or after their piece. I find myself screaming "will ya let him read the fcuking sportnews"! :o I prefer the more formal approach between presenters - cut out the idle chitchat!
I've noticed a few people mentioned Keelin Shanley and to be honest, I can't see what's wrong with it - but I would love for others to point out what I am missing?
I just can't concentrate on her subject as I'm continually distracted by that ridiculous accent. Almost every word seems contrived.

Joe Duffy, Marty Morrissey, Pat Spillane etc. have strong accents but they are natural not contrived or pretentious

The point people are trying to make is that they can't concentrate on the story because of the accents. One shouldn't have to 'concentrate' on the story. It should come naturally.

I agree-listening to George Lee at teatime makes me want to take a years supply of food into a hastily prepared nuclear bunker in time for the forecast nuclear winter. His downturn at the end of each sentence drives me mad.

Tone isn't the same as accent.

Eh no. Radio revolves around listenership figures which dictate advertising revenue which determines profits etc. It is in the Radio Station's interest to have a good presenter who will inform/entertain people, not irritate them.

Informing and entertaining are separate issues to a reporters accent. Are we talking about entertainment/information or reporters accents? Irritation is a personal matter.

Worst has to be Micháel O’Muircheartaigh - he brings back memories of a priest ridden Ireland of the fifties.

    Doesn't annoy me in the least - it's not a put-on accent.

As a Dub born and bred I don't have a problem with regional accents, it's the put on, marbles in the mouth, snooty, better than thou ones that get to me. That being said, there are some accents I just can't understand.
I worked for years for a Cork based company and got very frustrated saying pardon, sorry or just plain what, twenty times during a conversation. I also have problems with Kerry, Clare, Mayo and Donegal. Most others I can pick up easily.
I moved to Wexford some years ago and there is one guy, Jimmy Gahon, on South East Radio. This guy is a hoot, every report, no matter what the subject, be it the sad funeral of a young child or a County Council meeting is delivered in the same staccato monotone reminiscent of 1940's American newsreels. Drives me mad.

Michael McMullen of Today FM. That weird accent of his drives me nuts. Obviously a graduate of the Lloyd Grossman elocution school!

The Nordy accent, the way they say now, and six.

Ditto that, same thing happened to me in Cork - with some people I found myself repeatedly asking them to repeat what they'd said because I hadn't a clue. I used to get very embarrassed doing this actually because I felt really bad about it.

accents regardless of where there from can be both extremley pleastant to listen to or extremley annoying
for instance , its been mentioned in here that micheal mc mullen is extremley annoying to listen to , ive no problem with him
its been mentioned that keelan shanley is annoying , i like the way she speaks
i also like listening to miriam o callaghan , then again i love everything about mirriam
the two poshest accents on both radio or tv right now have to be emma mc namarra who does the businees news on radio 1 and rachel allen who has a cookery programme on rte television , there both extremley plummy accents but while i find rachels accent humorously posh to the point of being absurd
i find emma mc na marras accent nothing short of obnoxious to the point of being offensive , she truly is the most awfull assault on ones ears

Agreed. Almost painful to listen to.

Try listening to yer one Louise Heraghty on 98fm

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭tech77

The guy who introduces the sport news on 2fm (i think).

    Says something like
"Oooor teee eee (read rte) spooort on 2fm in association with aib".

The elongation of rte is ridiculous and extremely annoying.
Feel like strangling him and asking him what the fcuk is wrong with him everytime he comes on.

none of them hold a candle to emma mcnamarra in terms of pluminess

Well, fake posh accents run in that particular family. Her mother in law used to talk in an affected faux posh accent as well even though she hails from deepest darkest Laois.

    You're kidding me?!?

I always switch off when she does the business report. Jebus, that OTT put-on D4 accent makes me cringe.

Still, she can't beat Claire McKeown. Her voice made me want to kick the radio out of the dashboard.

Apart from the bogger on 98FM the next worst thing is Michael McMullen on Today FM. This tosser must have a 6 pack of Topflite golf balls in his mouth....RIDICULOUS.

Yeah, just been reading this thread, and it's hilarious how many people mention him, and spell his name as "Moikel MakMollon" :D

That Emma McNamara just gets on my t1ts. Her accent is loike, sooo put on. She even has this snotty diction that sounds like she's in a bad mood. Whoever hired her should be shot! Although, to her credit, she has toned it down lately.

I'm not against the D4/StilOREgan Rewd accents per se, either. People have been mentioning Keelin Shanley and Miriam O'Callaghan, but while Miriam can be a little bit grating, at least you can tell it's her own accent. And as for Keelin, well she's just like, I dunno, chocolate - in every way! Mmmmm....

i love keelan shanley , shes a really good journalist too

as for rachel allen , shes entertaining to listen to , shes the quintesential yummy mummy and she often forgets to wear anything under her blouse too

her accent is so plummy , its silly and amusing but not offensive

Moichael McMollan sounds like he's sucking a pair of plums. "Sorgio Gorcia had a sixty noine today". Tosser.

Only topped by that geebox that does the Clearwire ads, in that smug, condescending, American accent. Not if it was the only broadband provider in the country.

I cannot at all understand how someone could find objection with Michael O'Muich ....... O'Mhui ...... O'Muircea ...... MORIARTY ! and his accent - one of the most beautiful rounded real Irish accent - and I'm not even from the Kingdom - whilst some can be irritating and put on - give me a good honest Irish accent from North or South anyday over bland American or Australian accents - STREWTH !!!
