    The coddle thread not only made me hungry but it also made me think. I hail from a family of eleven kids (good catholic parents ;)) and as such most of the meals my ma used to make were to feed a multitude and of course we all have our favourites and when we come across them now it either sends us wandering down memory lane or we go not as good as me ma's ! So what were / are your favourites ?

    For moi it has to be

    3) mince / beans / spuds (beans were added to everything to stretch the meal)

    2) Cabbage and potatoes (corned beef when it could be afforded)

    1) All time fav Sheppards Pie

    sometimes we used to have baked beans mixed with mashed potato and bangers on the side but my all time favourite was a big plate of curly cale with fried eggs on top

    Also, a humongous bucket of porridge in the morning (there are 6 kids in our good Catholic family). She used to leave it stewing, so when the younger ones got to it, it was stuck to the bottom of the saucepan and had to be scraped off. Nothing like burned porridge to start the day.

    Staying with the Catholic theme, on Friday we had any fish we wanted, as long as it was smoked haddock.

    I am a savage, for bacon and cabbage, chicken stew, pot roast or meat loaf ;)

    When pa trout was in charge of meal times, he would make sandwiches ... but what a sandwich he would make; Toast, rashers, white pudding, fried egg and cheese (for some reason, pa trout didn't "do" sausages). Served with a side order of chips that were sourced from a friend of his who had a chip van, that we knew only as "Fat John's greasy chip van". Superb stuff.

    All time favouritest meal ever has to be ma trout's coddle. It sticks to yer ribs on a cold winters day.

    My mothers shepards pie. I would kill people for a chance to consume it.

    I was amazed when I found a woman who also made a good shepards pie.

    I was sold!

    My Mam weren't much off a cook so my grandad was the chef; coddle, curly cale with sausages and rashers (burnt to a crisp), Fridays were off course Fish days (mainly fish fingers..haha), Saturday was 'fry day'; sausages, rashers, eggs, pudding, fried tomatotes and fry bread (of course) all fried in the same pan swimmin' in frytex...wasn't one for the Sunday dinners.

    P.S. 'tea' every night consisted off bread buttered topped with chedar cheese
    and placed under grill until all bubbly

    I actually had my favourite meal that my Mother makes on tuesday. I called to her on my way home from work and she had a big pot of stew for me to take home.. Yummm.. sStew and Chef Brown sauce is my favourite dinner..

    Lads please tell me you've had this.

    Burgers (the old granby burgers that were sold seperately) fried and then let simmer in the pan with gravy and onions. Well buttered mashed potato onto the plate then cover it with the gravy and onions and finally on with the burger or two. mmmm.

    hell yeah!, i also love them on toast with pudding sausages hash browns and an egg.

    I remember that stuff, none of your girly olive oil or any to the other crap :)

    the usuall suspects,

    Stew
    Coddle
    shepards Pie (she wasn't great at these)

    But bacon and cabbage, to this day...the missus has a pain in her arse eating it at this stage I could eat it 7 days a week and never get bored what a meal

    heap of mustard on it too mmm!

    Bacon and cabbage and stew, either chicken or beef. When beef, my mother used to thicken up mine with gravy as that's how I liked it. Only bad point was the hlf bag of barley she used to put in with the stews. Whenever I go home now, on Saturdays it is still always bacon and cabbage as she knows I can't be arsed to make it myself.

    Ah yes! I remember that stuff. :)

    What did they call it - Soup Mix. Like a bag of white ball bearings that went into pretty much everything that went in a pot.

    Omelettes prob won't cut it.(here but they rock)

    Roast chicken, and mince with spuds. We didn't have beans with ours.

    Oh semolina, bread and butter pudding and ice-cream.

    Loved it then as now!

    For some reason we had salad on sunday. Nothing like the arsey fancy stuff of today! Lettuce leaves, tomatoes, boiled egg, beetroot from the jar, and chef salad cream. Oh and if we were lucky a slice of ham.
    My brother used to drink the beetroot from the jar:eek:he is still alive and has normal skintone!!!!

    Loved going to the granny's, fresh milk. From cow through linen cloth to fridge then glass and down the hatch.MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!
    Probably couldn't drink it now i am so used to the watery stuff in cartons!

    Oh yeah semolina, prettyinpink, good one! We were more of a tapioca house!
    Haven't had that in years now! Off to tescos we go......check beer stock......

    Need trick though, never heard that before.....

    My mum's cold remedy was just the best when I was a kid, hot Paddy served in bed :) She called it punch, didn't even realise it was Whisky... oh the innocence of youth :D

    Favourite meals cooked by Mama Billy & Nana Billy:

    Roasted stuffed beef heart
    Steak & kidney stew
    Coddle
    Roast beef (especially whole joints of sirloin)
    Crubeens
    Oxtail stew
    Baked liver & bacon with stuffing

    Coming from generations of butchers & cattlemen - I was privileged as a child to have eaten every edible part of the beast (with the exception of the eyeballs) by the time I was seven.

    You lucky son of a gun hill billy!

    I was served up some bulls testicles in Tunisia many years ago, was completely ignorant of the fact and chomped away like a good 'un!

    My three compadres were less ignorant and much amused.

    Tasted fine!

    Was not worth a life time of not being capable of denying that i lick, eat and suck balls though.....
    :(
