I would just like Apple to stop being stupid about this and opent he thing up. They are gonna sell more touches than phones anyway...they need to get over that and just push the touch more. What's gonna hold the phone back is the networks they select are gonna alienate customers. what they should have done was make it available for mulitple networks, take full revenue for the phone itself and licence them the technology for visual voicemail. Also they could have worked out with networks a payback method where they receive a percentage of data charges for the iphone's data usage.

Also, why not allow phone companies to susidise the purchase cost of the phone? They would end up shifting more units that way and still receive their money from the network for sales of the units.

Anyway back on topic...i am holding on to the belief that they will "free up" their control of the system on the touch. I am just a bit too worried about my touch being rendered useless by future updates if i were to hack it now. Maybe i will hold off for a bit and see what others do and where they (the big 'A') go with their response.

There is no problom bout breakin it with future updates as you can do a full system restore before you update!!
It will put it back the way it was when you opened the box!

    Good info there.
Just so I'm sure, is it possible that Apple could detect your modded settings if you connect to Safari for example and "brick" it? Think that's the term

A bit like Microsoft did with Xbox Live

http://ijailbreak.com/ Go here to get the OSX automated jailbreak app. He will release a new version later on tonight which will load on the iphone apps too but for now I gotta wait with those ones. The above links to the windows automator afaik. The step by step guide is a very long process.

Hmm, I'm sure Apple will release some stuff for the touch. They'd be silly not to. I don't really want to risk my pretty toy right now :)

hi I ran the jailbreak app and got it unlocked. I'm looking around for where you got maps and notes apps though. Also I've tried using summerboard to manage my themes and it moves my dock to the top of the screen and makes it useless. I've toted with all the settings but nothing works. Have u tried this. Any other recommendations. What have u installed? Any help would be great.

I was going to pick up an 8GB nano today but all this has me tempted to stretch a little extra to get the 8gb touch. Decisions, decisions!

I haven't chanced mine yet. Still waiting for a replacement unit so I reckon ill wait until the new one arrives. Bit unsure about the probability of them bricking it, I cant decide tbh.

hacked mine last night - the calender hack is great other than that i haven found a huge amount of useful stuff. the ebook reader will be hande when i get some books!

Sorry I forgot to mention my above link to the jailbreak app is Intel Mac only.

The to-do list is by far the most useful app on it now along with ical. I can see apple releasing an update including certain apps to combat this. They won't brick the ipod though as all you have to do is a hard restore. Unlike the iphone it is not attached to a network where it can become bricked.

Any preference for which method? i wanna try mine asap, I wish my replacement unit would arrive.

Only difference i could see is the automated jailbreak can have problems connecting to ur ipod of wireless at the end of the hack. Mine kept crashing as it wouldn't connect. I used touch free, worked first time round as it doesnt need to do this. Installing the iPhone apps was a bit tricky, got it working second time round. So so so so so so so worth it... Makes the Touch way way way better than it is in its original form.

Mail is class cause it saves me logging into gmail every time i'm online, as soon as it sees a wireless network i can see how many mails i have. Google maps is super slick.. being able to add to the calender is the way it should have been. Notes is class, brilliant for me as i always need to remember bits n bobs.

The Touch now is by far the best gadget I have ever owned, i do a load of work on site in hotels so have wireless net access near every job i'm on... so much easier than taking out the laptop.

I hope apple realise its potential n dont go messing about locking everything out with further updates.... Now if they release this new tablet pc esque device i'll be in heaven.

Ps. If none of this makes sense its cause i've had to much to drink n cant really see my keyboard,,,,,

Hacked mine the other day using the long terminal method. Had a few hiccups the first try, but got it running in the end and tried out most stuff off installer.app.

Anyway, in the end it was tearing thru my battery life, so I restored the software since there was nothing in it that was a killer app for me..

Can anyone tell me if you need to be online to use the google maps? Can you just download all of the maps and view them offline?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

you need to be online for the maps. have to agree wioth unklerosco on most of his comments.

Can you hack to run apple mail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 308 ✭✭Oirthir

If by Apple mail you mean the version that runs on the iPhone, then yes, but it's somewhat outside the confines of the law unless you own an iPhone as well.

Then again, i'm not sure how legal the jailbreaking is in the first place..

Just to confirm, you can actually reply to these mails - i.e. input text?
