Stonework over a window, what kind of steel to use

I am putting stone around my sunroom and have a number 4 foot windows with some walls aswell. There is also a french door opening out which is about 5 ft wide.

Anyone know what type of steel i will need to put up to support the stone that continues up the gable of the sunroom? and how can i best attach it to the walls ( which are ICF so i've 2 inches of insulation before the 6 inches of mass concrete)

LB, we have 4ft windows and they used steel lintels over the windows to carry the stone.

On the gable I am not sure, we had an RSJ to carry the block, but doing the stone I cannot answer that one sorry.

sounds like ur retrofitting the stone to outside of an existing building.

for lintels, use l shaped angles 150*100*5mm thick and use packing pieces at back of these so you are connecting directly to the concrete.

difficult situation here because u have insulation and plaster outside the structural wall. i would reccommend taking out a channel approx. 6" high across full length of wall and in as far as the structural concrete. then affix l shaped galvanised wire mesh, like plaster beading. do this every 2 feet or so and fill in with mortar behind new stonework. that way a good connection will be made between the new stonwork and existing structural concrete wall.

otherwise u could remove the external insulation an plaster an rebuild with new insulation and mechanically fixed wall ties, but this would be much messier.

notwitstanding the above i would get advice from a competent structural engineer. a site visit and mini report should not cost too much and they might be more willing if they did not have to sign off on the work, eg. take responsibility.

I used 150 X 150 i'd recommend you have them galvanised before putting them into position, out your way, Shannonside Galvanising out on the ballyneety road do this - i got 14 done all approx 1.5M except 2 were 2.0M galvanised for 500euro, don't have to worry about rust for a long time.

(additionally i got my hangers for the precast floor galvanised aswell)

i'm not fully familiar with ICF builds, i'm wondering how the stone will attach to the building, with normal blockwork you insert cut galvanised metal strips to ensure the stone adheres to the building....how will you get over this? imho "Construct 06 has made a very valid point" let us know the outcome
