so what if it stands out?

that's a good thing. the spike stands out and does nothing. this building will stand out and actually serves a purpose :p

finally, dublin gets a skyscraper. feck the old tradtional stuff.. it's boring and old. tear the whole city down and build it upwards is what i say :D

Is that how you really want Dublin to look?

Kinda takes the fun out of going to the affore mentioned cities too if they all just look like Dublin

cool buildings rock no matter what height (and dublin is seriously lacking in cool buildings imo).

The dublin docklands was a hellhole 10 years ago, now its a buzz with construction and long may it continue. a few tall buildings down there won't affect the history of this city, better them than the old warehouses that once stood there  It also won't turn dublin into Hong kong, NY or Las Vegas either ;)

i really like this proposal, there is plenty of space in the docklands to build tallish structures, 500ish foot isn't even that tall; burj dubai is going to end up at 2700 feet or thereabouts, Chicago spire 2000 feet, Las Vegas tower 1900 feet; so 500 or 600 foot is nothing in todays world.

I think that a lot of people need to get off Bono's back. I can understand people saying that they don't like his music or saying that his humanitarian work makes him think he is Jesus - anyone will be entitled to these views.

Bottom line is that they are responsible for some of the best music in the world and Bono has helped the lives of people through his work.

There are people on here saying that he should be hung from the top of this building ffs!!

And the complaints about Bono moving his cash offshore to save on tax, who wouldn't do that to save some of their cash. Hypocrisy methinks.

    Bit of perspective here.

All those cities have other tall structures around them so it's more in proportion. Dublin will have one monster building sitting at the Docklands looking ridiculous.

I see where people are coming from so maybe it's the whole 'naming it after those ****ing idiots U2' that is really my beef.

Chicago yes. Dubai and vegas no, next tallest building in dubai is 1600 feet shorter than Burj, next tallest building in Vegas (discounting the Stratosphere) will be 1100 feet shorter.

again i bring up the eiffel tower which sat alone towering 1000 feet above Paris for 100 years and the CN tower in Toronto which is 800-900 foot taller than the next tallest building.

Dublin has the spire at 400 foot, Liberty Hall and the Ulster Bank building both at 200 foot so the U2 tower won't look that out of place. In addition Heuston gate at over 500 feet will begin construction next year too

to get the people who don't come to dublin (due to the lack of iconic structures) to come to dublin :) Dublin could do better than just attracting hen and stag parties methinks.

In addition one iconic structure usually leads to another, then another and so on, e.g. new york, dubai, london, sydney etc etc
    And that's a good thing.
    Build up, not out.

    Well said.
It's very easy to jump on the Bono hating banwagon. Ask yourself what you would do in his position re: money.

    You have to start somewhere.
FFS, people complain about the lack of progress in the country, and then, when someone finally comes along and does something good, people still ****ing moan because they don't think it's enough.

In all honesty, I think people would complain about this if it was built by any Irish person, yet if it was someone foreign, they would be complaining that Irish people don't do enough for their own country.

As for the name, it's a tourist magnet.
But, no. People here don't like that because they think U2 are getting too big for their boots.

    When did that happen?

Come on now. Bono is a very brave man.

I'd love to have the balls to ask all of you to help end poverty and curb capitalism before spending 5 grand on a pair of shades. Pink ones too, if you don't mind.

And he was banging Andrea Corr. Just saying. Everyone knows though. Used to see them on baggot st. all the time. Oh yeah. Anyway, back on topic. Screw you bono.

I'd love to see a skyscraper(s) in Dublin, but not one thats named in honor of U2! I just can't stomach that. Its not much different than a statue of Bono being erected in Dublin. Its just way too ego worshipful.

I think anything someone names after themself, e.g. maths theories with their name in it, University buildings with their name in it, skyscrapers with their name in it... I just think: you ****ing tosser.

Just like when people set up charities and call it after themselves, in my mind they lose all credibility; they are just doing it to be remembered or be seen as "good" people.

    Bah!!

He actually used to bang a friend of a friend of mine too (I believe her - she worked as some kind of assistant.) So I always find it funny when people talk about what a great husband/man he is...

Ok, what nickname is this building going to have?

    The Dublin Knob?

    The Cock on The Dock?

    Twat Tower?

I think all would suit Bono's image to a T.

So now Sir Bono is getting a skyscraper called after him.........Is there anything else we can do to blow more sunshine up his ***? - The guy must think he is a god at this stage.
Well he is paying for it so why wouldnt he name it after his band?

Let me get one thing straight here cause its important - Bono is NOT paying for this building;)

I like it. Large buildings can look really good in a city if they are all in the same area. The docklands is the perfect place for them. Who cares what its called or who is backing it. It is an imaginative piece of architecture and will improve Dublin in my opinion.

I suppose the building would have to be that size to accomodate Bono's head.

You know, sometimes people just read the first post and then comment.

Not this guy. He just skipped the whole thread and made the same lame joke which appears in the first post.

I take issue with this. It was not a lame joke, it was original and witty:mad: If you can do better, be my guest..........

Bono is a dick. But building is nice. Enough said.

The saddest thing about this is that people are against this because it is Bono who is behind it. I have my own feelings about him too, but I am more than willing to put that aside to consider the general impact of the actual project on Dublin itself.
For many years we have endured the impact of a low rise, spread out suburban city, and its fair to say that most of us are sick of it. Dublin has needed to become high rise for a long time now, but some weird localized factors have always kept it at bay. This building is unusual and unique (in Dublin) so will be an addition to Dublin's Skyline. Liberty hall is not attractive, but yet is is still used to signify Dublin in many shots, so it would be nice even to just replace that by building something new and even bigger to gossip about.

This is a bold project, but something that could most definitely add to our capital city. Dublin's skyline is changing, there is no doubt about that, so it is nice to see something daring for a change, something outside the normal comfort zone in Ireland. God forbid the modern Irish city should look like the IFSC where every building is precisely 5 stories high, and the main difference between them is the colour of the mock stone at the front.

People come to Dublin for many reasons, the craic and the beer being just one of them. Dublin is actually quite a nice city, but people who live here never take the time to just look at what is around them. While some tourists here are here to see the "craic" that is getting vomited on in temple bar, many more are here to see the heritage and history of a very old and very rich culture. We have many things in our ancient history to be proud of, but so many of our modern achievements have been mundane to the extreme.
It is time to show the world that there is more to Ireland than the placid beauty of our past, and show that we are a part of a modern changing world.

Dublin needs to start accepting high rise structures, and all the better if we start to accept ones that are actually quite nice. While this building; on a global scale; is nothing of major significance, its certainly a step in the right direction. The artists conception is quite cool, so lets hope it can live up to expectation, and An Bord Pleanalla's staring eye.

Many large structures have been rejected in the past because we a re trying to maintain an overcrowded, poorly facilitated 12th century town/18th century city in its original state. Its time to accept that Dublin needs to change its ideas radically if its going to survive as a centre of commerce and tourism in a 21st century world.

He's paying something because he is part of the consortium that's developing it.

Emm U2 got too big for their boots a long time ago. This is just another rung at the top of a very long ladder. Why does Bono have to get his finger in every pie possible? Well because it's more publicity for him and his buddies. He craves the attention and he gets it. I'm sure the project could go ahead without him to be fair.

    Fair enough.
Let's just leave it to foreign developers then.

I don't see any onther Irish people trying to aid in the development of Dublin.

Sure why don't we wait until the brits come back and build things for us.
God forbid an Irish man should throw a few quid at the development of our capital.

Yeah. Bono is a wanker because he over-publicises himself while trying to do some good in the world. What an arsehole.

The Brits are long gone. It's time to get over the post-colonialism attitude and embrace those trying to do some good for our country.
So ****ing what if they make a few quid out of it. It's called progress.
Or would you all wish we were stuck in the 70's/ 80's with no money and no progress?

cop the **** on, the lot of you.
A few people try to do some good and you all slam them for it, while in the same breath you slam the government for not modernising Ireland.

Get over the fact that Bono pisses you off and look at the good work he does for this country.
I don't see any of you doing any good with your on-line bitching and moaning.

Let's start an on-line petition to get Bono out of Ireland. Yay.
