Umbrella company lost me a lot of money - where do I stand?

I was contracting for almost all of 2006 using an umbrella company in Cork to do my tax.

I have just completed my tax return and they told me I was only getting around 300 euro refund for rent. I queried this as I was told you can claim nearly 1/3 of your rent against tax and they have just told me I should have been doing this every month when submitting my expenses!

They never told me about this, I assumed it was claimed back at the end of the year. I even emailed them last year about it and they said once I submitted my lease to them i'd get my refund.

Surely they should have mentioned this, they knew I had never contracted before. I also didn't receive my lease on my apartment until several months after I moved OUT. I witheld 3 months rent at the end because of this and the fact there were several problems with the apartment and the letting agent refused to put me in contact with the landlord. The letting agent now wants this back and I am going to be out of pocket.
I have a feeling the umbrella company are going to tell me they couldn't write anything off as an expense as I was not provided with any receipts for my rent.

Where do I stand on this?

My ex-umbrella company never told me either and I figured like 2-3 months later.

As a company director, even with an umbrella you should know your rights and obligations anyway and they are not really the people to be blamed for, even if as an umbrella company and you as a customer they should have told you. Especially when I use to pay them 300 quid a month.

But from the very beginning they gave me an "Expenses" template, when I took the chance to actually really look at it, I called them to get some explanation and get my rent expenses back for the past 3 months.

In your case this was the last year, so I do not know, maybe the fiscal year has ended already and this is dead.
