I'm looking to pick up a cheap used car, first car so I'm not looking to spend any more then 1000 on it. I'm in contact with a guy at the moment who's selling a 97 Lancer 1.3 GLX for 800, he says it's driving fine but needs the clutch replaced. Should I even consider this car, would a new clutch cost a lot?

    Cheers

Great cars, Clutch should be about 250 including labour. Is it slipping badly?

This doesnt mean there is anything wrong with the car , clutches wear down and need to be replaced - just like brakes , tires etc.

Id say if the rest of the car is in good nick go for it!

Personally I'm not mad on buying work - get a very firm quote for the work, and then see what you can get for that plus the purchase cost and see if it's a good deal.

Thanks for the replies lads. I've been looking at Lancers for the last few months, haven't seen anything in that price range for 1.3's just 1.6's. I suppose it's not bad if the rest of the car is alright, pending inspection of course, I haven't even seen it yet except the pictures.
