What do you guys think of buying new laptops on ebay? If the sellers marks it as a gift, does that eliminate customs charges because they will think it is from a family member etc?

No, it means customs will be more likely to check it. Marking 'gift' doesn't work anymore.

Interesting, so how exactly do family members in the states send laptops over to their "loved ones" in Ireland? I heard this means they don't get hit by customs charges.

The only way you can avoid these charges is if they physically carry it over themselves. Anything outside of EU member states is liable for taxes / duty, the exception being documentation.

Pay them extra to put in a little birthday card and wrapping paper and a few photos of your "family" :D

If possible order one with a UK keyboard and ask them to put a note in "returning your laptop"

Actually if you sent a laptop off to be repaired, would there be any customs due on it , or would you have to prove you got it here ?

Does the service contract provide cover on this side of the pond ??
