ESB charge for removal of old meter

    Can anyone comment on my rights in the following situation:

    Approximately 8 months ago I purchased a secondhand home – this house had 2 ESB meters as part of the house was in a granny flat.

    I notified the ESB by phone that I had no requirement for the second meter as my electrician was running all the electricity into the one meter. I asked them would they do this job as I was a new customer and was told no but tthat they would take a note of this and would not charge for the removal of the meter when it was ready to go.

    Now that the electrical work has been done and all the electricity output is from one meter they want to charge me 85 euro to remove the meter. I have argued that I should not be charged for the removal of equipment that I never ordered and that the 2nd meter was a contract between them and the previous occupant. However they maintain that when I purchased the house I “purchased” the meter situation. If I decide to leave the redundant meter in the house they will continue to charge the standing charge for that meter.

    Have I any rights here at all? I believe that the cost of removing excess ESB equipment should fall to the ESB and not myself as I never ordered this equipment when I purchased the house.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    You bought the house with the modifications already there, I don't think the ESB should have to pay to return the house's electrical setup to the pre-granny flat situation.

    I accept that - thats why I got my electrician to re-route the electricity through to the one meter. What I dispute is that I should have to pay a "disconnection charge" for them to take it away.

    i also think it should be borne in mind that the ESB made their money over a number of years from the standing charge on this extra meter and the fact that I don't require it should not cost me.

    Struggling to see the legal issue here. Check the terms and conditions of the contract for ownership status / decommissioning old equipment.

    Simply ask the ESB to disconnect the power to the meter. Are you receiving bills in respect to this meter? If so simply stop paying they won't be long removing it.
