Gentlemens Club ideas for Luke's place?

    Good Evening,

I was playing in Luke's club tonight and got to wondering.... (i also discussed all this with Luke and he has no problem with it)

Would there be many readers here who would travel to the third floor just to play chess? Or indeed any other game, possibly even online (such as world of warcraft etc).

Its such a wonderful venue I would love to see it have the same atmosphere as the Gutshot, serving plenty of good coffee and welcoming even to non card players.

If I were to organise a chess league would anyone turn up or would it turn into my old horse game in the Fitz? In fact if I were to try to resurrect a cheap as chips on a Saturday HORSE game from 5pm would anyone turn up?

If I could persuade Ianmc to donate all his poker books would others do the same so we could have a true poker library, as any decent gentlemen's club ought to?

I'm trying to figure out a way to utilise the beautiful space on the third floor that overlooks Merrion Square..... One could come in simply to have a sandwich and browse the internet before heading out on the town. If you have any ideas you can post them here, or pm me or if you like mention this thread to Luke and see if his plans could incorporate yours.

I would certainly attend a poker players chess club if there are any takers. We could also have a chess library alongside the poker library.

If I get ten players who agree I will organise one for a Sunday afternoon. If I get ten HORSE players I will organise that too for a Saturday afternoon from 5pm. Or earlier if others prefer.

Luke has plans for the basement but the location is just fantastic and I would like to be part of those plans. I've also always wanted my own Gentlemens Club, rather like the Travellers Club or Fly Fishermens club in London. We could call it the Phileas Fogg room in honour of the perfect Whist player himself.

    Any ideas?

  For a moment I had images of lapdancers and shiny poles

I thought most unlikely - Then I see you mean chess and Backgammon - Phew!

If I was in Dublin I'd go for it.:)

thanks MickL, i may hold you to that!

the snooker table idea sounds great, i don't know if it would be possible, unless we could get one that can be quickly disassembled, but yes, that would be great.

good idea Doc, I would use/play all of library/chess/horse/snooker table.

along with some other ideas :
    • high backed chairs
    • Darts board
    • computer access (as mentioned)
    • newspapers

;) might as well do it properly!

exactly, and in order to make it pay there could be a nominal price for coffee, say 2 euro, this would pay for the internet access. (and also decent coffee)

How big is the third floor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

thanks for the lapdancing derailment Len, now can we get back to the gamesmanship re chess and snooker and HORSE.

I have also a personal interest in games which aren't played anymore such as piquet and whist and would like to develop variations of poker like Southern Cross etc, also lowball games and 7 card stud variations.

its an opportunity to exercise your mind without emptying your wallet.

    develop variations of poker

when in Barcelona I was playing 2 interesting games with Greg Raymer of all people ...

one was 17 card chinese poker where you play a 5 card hand, 3 card hand, low hand (5) and a badugi (4) hand. We play heads up and took a while to sort out the hands but was interesting to hear his views.

Also played a triple draw split pot game. 5 cards where you have to get a 2-7 low hand and try make a badugi (4) hand also. Was good to hear his views on strategy in this too.

    I thought lapdancers too :(

They could put a couple of beds up there and charge by the hour (not connected with previous comment, just for sleep). Many's the time when it would have come in handy.

do you just download like 50 randon pictures and see where you can fit them into the poker forum?!

+1 for newspapers and high backed chairs. I also think a nominal annual membership fee would be a good idea, and that we get to vote on future people entering! :)

    Wii prop bets ftw

I like the idea of chess,
I don't play, but i'd be better than the average non player,
but behind anyone who knows the game

its a game id like to get going at

there's not enough name dropping in this thread! i demand more! :D

as much as i admire the elitist approach
( +1 for newspapers and high backed chairs. I also think a nominal annual membership fee would be a good idea, and that we get to vote on future people entering!)
i'm not sure if its a little early. but i'll give it some vague musing.

How about calling it the Cesna club, which stands for the Cliquey Elitist Super Nerds Aviation Club. I only put the aviation bit in to fill out the acronym.

it could be a club for super nerdy gamesmanship battling it out in Monopoly, Risk, Battleship, Hungry Hungry Hippo, and other games of pure skill.

if anyone wants to resurrect the HORSE game can they put their names down here on this thread.

if anyone wants to join the chess night, nominated as Monday 8th October can they register their interest here.

each Monday could be a different card/strategy game, perhaps even more than one game.

i will look into the snooker table idea. if they are cheap enough i might be able to get my boss to sponsor one.

    High Stakes Bingo.

I suck at chess but i like the idea.

Also, High Stakes Counter-Strike (none of your fancy Source nonsense though)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭Glowingmind

    And another thing,

It's not a real gentleman's club if these two aren't sitting in the corner.
    dukes.jpg

And yes, i know they're both dead, but still.......

    Poker/Graverobbing roadtrip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭Doc Farrell

they'd still be livelier than most players i know.

so.... free internet, all the coffee you can drink for 2 euro, cheap sandwiches, free snooker (on a table of dubious quality) a poker and possibly chess library (which is not a lending library and remains in situ) and just for Len, the occassional nerdy lapdancer.

if chess is nobody's idea of a super fun time maybe we could change it to a HORSE game for Monday 9th, 50 euro buyin, half pot, 50 cent blinds etc.

if anyones up for this Inaugral session can they raise their glass?

ill trip in for a chess game, see how it goes, if it sucks,
    make it horse next week

I'll happily play for a few hours on the 8th or 9th (as long as the game's still going at 11)
