    Hi

jst wondering if any body can give me a spot of assistance :D

I have eircom broadband which is wireless and has been workin perfectly fine until last week. basically I lost network one night while online and have been having problems since in tryin to get the connection. I can get the connection at times and other times not, its not a secure connection as I had problems anyways when it was enabled so disabled it, and according to eircom all is working proper on their end so they "think" its my end.

I have 2 laptops, a Dell Inspiron 6400 which is brand new and also a toshiba which is a few years old, the toshiba 1 doesnt have a cable connection so can only use that wireless, so if i try to connect it will find the network sometimes, connect but activity is very poor, and it looses it quick,on the dell laptop same thing happens but I can connect this one to broadband via the cable and router box. its a netopia router I have.

I have changed the channels as this was a problem before, done all their diagnostic tools they have on the netopia page and they are all comin back ok:confused:

I dont mean to sound pedantic here but the first thing to understand is that you dont have wireless broadband - if you have Eircom you have a dsl connection which means that you get your broadband over the phone wire which you then share via a wireless router with other computers. Its similar to cordless phones dotted around a house sharing a basic telephone connection.

It is important to understand the distinction if you want to diagnose what is going wrong. Is it the basic connection with Eircom or is there a problem with your wireless connection between the router and the laptop.

So step 1 when you have problems is to see if the Netopia is syncing with Eircom - the dsl light on the Netopia should tell you this or you can enter http://192.168.1.254 and check the start page on the Netopia and it will tell you there what speed it has synced at. It is best to carry out this part with an ethernet cable connecting the laptop to the Netopia. If you are syncing ok with Eircom then Eircom's responsibility ends - its not up to them to make sure your wireless router and your laptops 'talk' to each other.

So can you confirm firstly that you are syncing ok with Eircom and that you get ok speeds when you connect your laptop via cable to the Netopia.

Can you then tell us what wireless settings you have set up in the Netopia?

Also how far away are the laptops when you try to connect wirelessly to the Netopia?

yeah, its lighing up proper and on the netopia page it says speed is 1024/128 kbps.

setting are- default channel 5 (had to change this initally due to cordless phones) privacy off, limited by mac address disabled. block wirless bridging and enabled closed system mode not ticked.

when on dell its less than foot away and toshiba is up stairs.
