I know the GMB type well enough*. I was afraid to go to the GMB more often for fear of becoming a tosser. Tbh there is far more internal hatred within schools in trinity then between schools or with other colleges. I mean the bitterness between the various engineering factions is astonishing at times.

*Note I do not consider shay a GMB type.

You get an Honours Degree (the BAI) assuming you did well enough so there's no need for the Honours BA. However, after you graduate 3 years you can upgrade it to an MA for a small fee (think it's around €500 or so). If you do this and then go on to do another masters though, you'll find that you won't be able to obtain grants/tax relief on the masters so it might be an idea to do a 'real' masters first.

Ah right. Thanks for the info. Interesting that you can just buy a Masters! Or do you actually have to sit the exams?

It's not that kind of masters. Although it's an MA, it's mostly used for archaic internal bureaucracy.

The simple explanation is, it's a ceremonial celebration of
a) studying for four years rather than the usual three, and
b) surviving in the "real world" for three years despite being a Trinity graduate.

Essentially you fork out €543 for a ceremony and the privilege of changing the letters after your name. Although I can imagine it could have its advantages for science/engineering types, who may elsewhere in that three years read an Msc and resultingly have both an MA and an Msc.

I did read somewhere that the MA's awarded in this way must be titled MA(Dubl.) , MA(Oxon.) , or MA(Cantos.) depending on which university at which you afforded yourself this little gratuity. I suppose this is to show employers and the like that no further study was done to earn this title. :rolleyes:

MA (Cantab.) is the Cambridge version actually. What's more, provision exists in College regulations that a BA holder from any of the three unis can have their MA conferred by any of the three universities - eg a person with a Trinity BA can get either a Trinity, Oxford or Cambridge MA. But I think that in practice this only generally happens when the person has some link to the other university (if they become staff members there for example).

I remember coming across a reference to the provision on the Oxford website a few years ago, possibly this page (see section 1.9). It could be out of date though, or perhaps Trinity no longer reciprocates the recognition.

Im a 25 year old Mature Student starting Natural Sciences. I was a finacial broker for the last few years and got fed up with it. That coupled with some health issues brought about my carrer change. Beging to feel a bit strung out already. Think I might off bitten off more then I can chew. I havent written a essay let alone a proper equation in 7 years. a
