West Cork is fabulous indeed. But one would think your loyalties lie with a certain town in County Kildare.

Ah Maynooth is lovely and all but if I had a choice I'd live in West Cork or Kerry....so is that what everyone's doing, just putting down where they live? Not really the point is it?

If you can tolerate piss poor nightclubs and an overwhelming population of scum bags, crustys and yuppies than Galway is o.k...the food is pretty good and the housing is ok....weather blows too...

Galway (if the inflated cost real estate bubble bursts, and the water problem is resolved).

    To buy that's relatively affordable(ish) - Roundwood,
Country living but city accessible. Mountains and lakes on your doorstep.
I suppose nature isn't everyone's thing, but city living ain't mine either !

There've been a lot of threads about quality of life issues and I was wandering has anyone done any research on the best place in Ireland to live? Taking into consideration the following:

    Quietness
    Lack of Crime
    Reasonable house prices
    Availability of employment etc
Oh where I live (Shercock, Co. Cavan) is probably one of the quietest towns in all of Ireland, next to no crime apart from the odd scuffle between boozed up friends on a bank holiday weekend. Hardly any scumbags around, or at least not enough to cause you any bother.

House prices are cheaper than any town around here, €245k for a three bed semi detached would probably be the average and €180k for a two bedroomed apartment. There is plenty of employment around, Carton Bros (Manor Farm) factory employs around 500-600 people, and that is just the one place.

You're an hours drive to Dublin & Belfast (50 mins to Dublin airport), 30 mins to Cavan, Navan, Dundalk and Monaghan.

Never lived in Galway, but have visited there. It's a really lovely city.. real down to earth people. I'd say there.

I'd prefer not to get a serious case of the shíts every time I turn on the tap, personally ;)

West Cork is nice (Glandore on a nice day ftw) - but too far from anything to be worth it.

Aye, she's a twin turbo 190,000 bhp beasht of a yoke hai...

Seriously though, without bending the speed limits (too much ;) ) you can make it to the airport via N2/M1 in 50 mins. Made it home from the blue car park in 45 minutes one morning.

Best places to live (in my opinion)
    - Portmarnock, County Dublin
    - Camross, County Laois

I have been to Galway on visits and it too looks nice. The good supply of nice watering holes might be a factor in my opinion on that one :D

Cavan is lovely, and ideal if your into your fishing.

The countryside in East Clare between Killaloe and Gort is fantastic. Also North Clare.

The Lee Valley just north of Cork

Galway is nice but its not the best

rb_ie: Yes, the thought of living in a tiny box in a skobe and wanker-infested sprawling urban wasteland is highly attractive. Thanks for the contribution.

I'd say Galway also. You're right by the sea, the city is a walk away, the night life rocks and its just a damn nice place to be.

parts of wicklow and kildare are lovely and still near dublin......west cork is in a league of its own - schull, glandore, union hall etc....like a different world down there. last time i was there though i noticed so many for sale signs and it's full of dubs at the weekends which can ruin the peacefulness quite a bit. parts of clare are quite nice...and i've always had a soft spot for donegal.

    Killarney Co. Kerry.

Fleece and ride tourists in the Summer, kick back for the winter. None of this D4 try and keep up with your neighbours lark. Just clean air, good living and plenty of football victories to savour.
