I am wondering about irish opinion of workers from eastern europe.
Do irish people employ lads from eastern europe because they are
cheaper to employ or because they are good employees?

I think that most people don't care where a worker is from as long as they are willing to work.

Foreign workers are welcome here because they are cheap labour. As soon as there is a downtrun in the economy the foreign lads will be the first to be let go. See below where 5 foreign lads, worked with a company a year and a half, the employer couldn't bother his arse to tell them to their faces they were being let go, sent the P45's in the post.

"‘‘In one case, some Romanians went back home for the two-week summer break and when they returned they were told their jobs were gone."

‘‘In another case, five non-national carpenters were just sent their P45s in the post without warning, after working for one employer for a year-and-a-half. They were not given notice or redundancy - both of which they are entitled to."

My opinion of them is that some of them are well worth a punt.

Quoted for truth. It's not really about "dey tuk arr jawbs" at all.

Good and Bad, got a Croatian guy working with me and is sound as a pound.

You get others that are muppets, they are humans and have good and bad traits.

Only thing I dont like is the very very high drinking and driving culture and bad driving otherwise if they play ball I am happy if they dont BISH BASH BOSH.

Its not so much that they are cheaper to employ, they are easier to abuse. What with minimum wage laws in this country, a shop can get shut down for paying under that rate, which is quite high.

So what they do instead is keep them in "training" forever, which means they can pay them what they want. Any problems, just ditch them and hire another two. Eastern European workers are delighted to have a job, any job, since even the low pay they receive is worth five times more back home - a bit like if that minimum wage was €40 an hour.

For Irish people, on the other hand, this is their home, and they are always looking out for a better job, better conditions, and better pay, with little tolerance for the shite a lot of managers try to pull.

That's just the start of the perks as far as employers are concerned. Eastern Europeans can be paid normal wages for overtime, Sundays and antisocial hours, since they don't know they are entitled to more, and can be made to work that extra hour after work to clean the place up, the list goes on.

Then again, in fairness they only come here to milk as much money as they can and then return back to wherever they came from, so what goes around comes around, really. The main losers are the low skilled to semi skilled Irish workers.

Im not sure they are particularly harder working in more white collar jobs, however they are harder working in more blue collar min wage type stuff. Generally they are like the Irish in terms of hard graft but Ive worked with two (both women) who were sinfully lazy.

As for Irish folks opinions, dont take boards as an example. I not sure some of those who shout the loudest here have met more than 3 Poles

    you can't generalise so easily..

Look at the irish workers in work, there are plenty of good and plenty of bad workers too..

Can't see how it's gonna be different based upon being from "eastern europe"(an incredibly large area to generalize also..)

i cant speak for all obviously. Any east european i worked with in my business was a very hard workin employee. Then again im workin in a semi to fully skilled industry.

You have to bear in mind eastern europe is quite a large place, and each country has a different culture etc so this thread is OVERLY generalising!

i quite like slovakians, they're good banter

ultimately how good a worker is has nothing to do with where they're from, its down to the individual.

Some employers in Ireland treat their employees disgracefully and try to get away with as much as they can. With these people, all nationalities, even Irish, are treated in the same manner. It's unfortunate that these unscrupulous b******s are giving Ireland a bad name.

I've spoken with many Irish people who told me that they were treated with a lot more respect by their UK employers than they ever were here.
