Global Warming - is CO2 the cause?

First of all, im not saying global warming does not exist. It does. However after watching this film http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/G/great_global_warming_swindle/index.html
my views changed a lot. Before I seen it, i just assumed global warming was due to CO2 from factories, cars (USA:rolleyes: ) etc... but i never heard any other reason for it, or a good reason to dismiss the CO2 theory. This film cuts the CO2 theory apart, by saying it is mainly the sun, or more to the point sun spots that cause global warming, and there is a lot of evidenve to back it up. I would suggest having a look at it and get the other side to the story, it is really interesting.

the concludion is that we have nothing to worry about, the temperature of the earth has been going up and down for millions of years, and there is nothing we can do about it. During the bronze age, it was a lot hotter than is is now, and the polar bears and penguins didnt die out!!

Yeah but during the bronze age the penguins didn't have humans making chocolate bars out of them.

is not a myth, it has being going on for millions of years, its just not human's fault and there is nothing we can do about it, no need to worry about it

must have a look at that
its also mentioned on the film that so many people in the world are employed by the global warming theory, that if it was disproved, hundreads of thousands would be out of a job!

    taken from the above link

This is the film that caused all the fuss. According to a group of scientists brought together by documentary-maker Martin Durkin, if the planet is heating up, it isn't your fault and there's nothing you can do about it.

Since then, two of the scientists who took part in the film, have made public complaints about the way the film was made. They claim that the way the film was edited gave a misleading impression of critical data and their own viewpoints. There has been a storm of complaint from at least 37 other scientists.

In August 2007, Mike Lockwood of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory published a study which may have put the final nail in the coffin for the anti-CO2 brigade. He has shown than since 1985, solar activity has run in the opposite direction to global warming and therefore cannot explain rises in average global temperatures. If this study turns out to the true, then the arguments presented in this film lose much of their strength.

it takes more than 20 years for the temperature to change. it can take hundreads of years to change the temperature of the oceans as they are so big. 20 years in nothing, this research goes back thousands of years

I already got Ocean Evaporate and All Mountain Falling.

    Very good I must say.

I seem to remember something in that program about where they checked the CO2 and temp levels for the past x hundred years from polar ice cores and found that they did change in relation to each other. Only thing was that the CO2 levels would change 80 years after the temperature change had occured.

It's the global temperature that causes the CO2 levels to change not CO2 causing the temperature to change.

I am right. Why are there no women on the internet (or very few anyway)? Because they are too busy yapping. Da boyos are on d'internet coz we're anti-social nerds who don't talk and on the small number of occasions we do we look down at our feet and avoid eye contact and give monosyllabic answers. When we see someone we know on one of our few ventures into the fresh air we try to avoid them or just grunt in passing if we can't.

    All FACT.

On a serious note the reason for global warming in my view are people/companies that decides it's cool to cut down all the Rainforests (the worlds lungs)...That's a major reason for the increase in CO2 and all mans fault.

Wouldn't that be a reason for global colding then?

im not goning to dismiss that idea, you do have a point, but from this film, it says the temp rises first, then the CO2 rises not the other way around. the rise in CO2 is very small when its compared with the other gases in the atmosphere

Experiments have been run many times that have discredited the "sun's output" theory. The amount of heat we're receiving from the sun has actually decreased over the past few decades.

Even if it is a myth its still no excuse to go around f**king our planet up. That haze around dublin city is no joke.

    Iceage ftw

global warming is a load of bulls**t. We should be focusing on much more important issues like pollution in the ground, rivers, seas, lakes etc than on an assumption/theory that nobody can prove. The earth has gotten colder and warmer many times, the earth has tilted numerous times too so that the northern and southern hemisphere swap places.

Hole in the ozone layer anyone?? Oh yeah the scientists got that completely wrong too i forgot ;)

What about the impending ice age that had everyone shíting themselves in the 70's?

Sure, just like we got the year 2000 bug completely wrong. The anti-climax had nothing to do with the fact that we spent millions on preparing for it, nothing whatsoever. Just like the fading of the ozone layer issue was due to hysteria and nothing to do with the ban on CFCs. For that reason, we should never have banned CFCs, we should have just buried our heads in the sand.

    </sarcasm>

I should also note that the absence of plastic bags littering our countrysides has nothing to do with the plastic bad levy. It was all just a mass hallucination that the Government induced to get us to pay more stealth taxes.

We have to focus on these and on global warming too. The problem atm is that environmental impact is mostly not factored into our economic system so it gets ignored. We're obsessed with consuming stuff but we tend not to give much thought to where the residue of this consumption goes afterwards. Can the human race see beyond the immediate and plan so that the planet remains habitable into the long-term future? I'm not so sure. We don't seem to do all that well on long-term planning.

Anyways, most climate scientists agree that there's a high probability that human activity is causing global warming... oops I mean climate change... so I'd go with their expertise rather than a few rogue documentary-makers. There's a possibility they're wrong but we have to plan for the worst case scenario rather than burying our heads in the sand and hoping it goes away tbh.

Some fool on the BBC did a new show taking into account what the fools on C4 said and showed that we are infact having an affect on the global temperature.

Niether side can be trusted. All these so called "scientists" should meet out the back after school and just punch it out, winner says what's what then we can all get on with our lifes.

there was someting on skynews about all the mooses in canada produce mode Co2 farting in a day then 30 transatlantic plane crossings!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,787 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

The oceans produce more CO2 than everything else put together but the fact remains that we have dumped a massive amount of CO2 into the atmosphere that was never there before.
