Just wait until the faithful arrive.

Also expect some grief for supporting Celtic.
Apparently the only Irish people who are allowed to support them are gun toting 'Ra heads.

    I always found that strange.
Hibernia is the Roman name for Ireland, Caledonia was Scotland and Britannia was England and Wales.
You would think that those who wanted to support an Irish type of team would support Hibs instead of a team with a hard "C".

There is actually a debate about what the correct pronounciation and spelling of keltic/ celtic is. Last I saw, they were saying that Celtic is the correct pronounciation.

As a life long fan of my local team, I have never really got the whole 'support the team thats winning the league' mentality. I am a fourth generation celtic fan and grew up with rangers winning 9 in a row, so I'm definately not a glory hunter.

Guys who pick Chelsea or Blackburn because they won the league/ are playing well will never really know how good it feels for lifelong born an bred fans when the ball hits the nit in the 93d min. They might think they are happy, they might jump up and down, but they will never really feel the way a lifelong Man U will feel when they score against Liverpool.

As for Irish people supporting Chelsea? Have they ever met their supporters? I cant imagine they'd welcome irish catholics. Don't they have a fascist element?

Actually now i think of it, the most popular UK football team in Ireland is probably the National team. Where it seems no Irish need apply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Timans

I really don't think that this is a very good image for Celtic fans. Like, why must people look beyond FOOTBALL!?

They're football teams, not fascists, not religious biggots, football teams!

Support who you want, preferably your hometown.

Indeed but only to differentiate it from bog-ball. ;)

The most popular team is almost certainly Manchester Utd simply due to 17 recent years of winning stuff which always helps. Liverpools upturn is down to the same thing - the 2001 treble and 2005 CL has got a new bunch of 8-16 year olds wearing Gods true colours.

Some of us feed off the folk memory of actually picking up the league championship. :)

Supporting Celtic is a reflex/inherited action if you live here. No one would if they thought about it in footballing tems.

    Mike.

Nobody picked up on my mistake, so I'll continue stirring the pot.

Why don't you all support your local team instead of spending your money on foreign teams?
If you gave enough money to LOI teams, then the players might not leave for foreign teams.
Or maybe those you are supporting are just in it for themoney.
I remember my friend getting "Kanchelkis(sp) on the back of his ManU jersey, only for the guy to leave a few weeks later for more money elsewhere.

Well, what about people who can't get lifts to all the LOI matches?

I would love to support Wexford Youths more but I cannot get to the matches as much as I would like where as, I can 80% of the time, watch a match on tele.

No amount of money from the fickle public will turn the LOI into anything other than what it already is. Nope, Russians is whats required.

Allow me to give you an example.
I'm a big U2 fan (yeah, shoot me, I like what I like).
In 1993, when I was 17 years old, I made my way to Cork to see them. I had nowhere to stay overnight, but I didn't care because I got to see them play.
If you are that comitted, you will find a way.

It's funny because these same people who claim it's a problem to get to Tolka park/ Finn park/ Terryland park etc also regularly travel to Old Trafford/ Parkhead/ Anfield once or maybe twice a year.

Remember my mate laughing at me for travelling to Cork to see Shels and then a week later he went to Anfield.

    Accrington Stanley anyone?

    Nope, thought not.

Supporting foreign teams is stupid. Simple as. I support Shels. An Irish team. Not Celtic, a team with a tenuous link to Ireland. Watching your team every week on TV is not support. That's being a fan of a team. Those who pay in every week, go to away trips are the real fans. Travelling all the way to Derry and back last year in one day to see Shels lose on penalties in the League Cup final eafter having 80% of the possesion is what real football supporters do

    Accrington Stanley anyone?

Give them 4 years and they'll be in the Prem. :)

Ive never met a Portsmouth fan here in my life. The list would be

    1- Man U (unfortunately)
    2- Liverpool
    3-joint between Chelsea and Arsenal
4- A sought after place between Spurs, Man City, Everton and Newcastle
5- There are still some die hard Leeds lads around praying to the gods to restore them :)

And an honourable no.1 goes to SunderIreland. Nobody gave a bollix 2 years ago but everyone wants to see Keane say **** you to every prem team bar their own.

As said, Celtic is seldom a stand alone club, most Celtic fans support a prem team too, more often than not Liverpool.

Also OP, Glasgow, best ****ing city in these islands :D

In all fairness though Terry, Not only is sacar a durty ould barracks sport but LOI is run by bowsies and cornerboys, roddy collins and all that shower. Add to that the amount of skobies that follow the big LOI teams and sure you'd be mad to have anything to do with them.

In annyways Sky sports doesnt show LOI matches, how could your average irish soccer fan be expected to follow it? :D

If you had a clue about LOI football you'd know that Roddy Collins hasn't been in a job in 2 and a hlaf years. And English football has far more problematic fookers going to games then the few kids we have causing trouble

There are one set of supporters whom in the majority i wholey dislike and that is Celtic Fans, those Celtic Cross Tatooes etc, they are a horrible group of narrow minded baffoons..

Anyhow i'd say there is a good number of spurs fans aussi.

30 people, "fans" of 2 of the leagues 22 clubs. 20,000 people attend LOI games every week. I'll leave you to work out the percentage yourself
