Reasons why my 3 month old Macbook is taking 40 seconds to boot?

    Any ideas people?

    Could it be that I've used and removed the boot camp partition several times?
    Seems to take forever to start up so i timed it and its roughly 38 seconds.

    I own a 2nd gen Macbook, bog standard 2.0gHz model, 1 gb ram etc... nothing upgraded.

    What do you expect it to be? 40 seconds is kinda normal. I've never timed it but that's roughly how long my imac takes. I rarely restart though.

    Anyway if you want it to restart a little faster try getting more RAM or do a clean install. You're unlikely to see a huge improvement though.

    It used to be faster, the grey screen hangs on me like then the apple logo pops up...

    My imac is certainly faster, and my macbook did used to start up quite a bit faster, usually in 25 seconds or so. It really is not that big a deal but I am wondering if there is a specific reason why it has slowed down.

    I won't do a clean install until Leopard is officially released, unless I have a go at the Beta but I'm not too pushed

    If it's hanging for a long time on the first grey screen then it might indicate it's having a problem finding the startup disk. So you might be right about the bootcamp partition removal having something to do with it but it's unlikely. You could try backing everything up, reformatting the disk and restoring to be sure. It's a lot of hassle though.

    Tbh provided the hdd checks out in Disk Utility and your not experiencing any other problems I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Maybe just do a hardware test (via the os x install disc) to be sure there's nothing else wrong. There's nothing unusual about a 40 second boot time. A new machine with a fresh install will always boot a little faster.

    I'm not too worried but I wanted to post here to make sure there is no known issue that I'm not aware of. I'll do a disk check and then a hardware test to make sure its all good

    Make sure that you have the correct disk selected as the Startup Drive. I had this problem too after installing and removing Bootcamp.

    ya my g5 imac used to boot in about 10 seconds when i first got it and it takes about 30 seconds now.
    i assume it has something to do with all the crap i have installed on it.
    i have gigs of rubbish on my desktop too and other applications that run on startup. but im selling it in october so ill be doing a clean install but it doesnt really bother me. at least its not a pc.

    <checked>
    <select OS>
    <starting Windows>

    Try holding down "Command v" at boot time. This will show the boot process. You can then see what line it's hanging on.
