Explanation of the Irish word "cis"

    Can anyone give me a definition of the word "cis"?

    My understanding is that it means basket or crate but my girlfriends dad reckons it means "bridge" in old irish.

    Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

    cis as in handicap (Golf)

    or it can be cis as in basket/ crate(cispheil basketball)

    There's three meanings given in Niall Ó Dónaill's Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla:
    cis. 1. Wicker container; basket, crate. 2. Plaited or crossed twigs as support for causeway. 3 = CISEACH (wattled causeway; improvised path, footbridge, over soft ground or drain).
    So your girlfriend's dad is apparently right, cis is an alternative word for ciseach which can mean bridge.
