Galway - Aughrim, Co. Wicklow: best route?

Hey all,

Anyone know the best route from Galway to Aughrim, Co. Wicklow? The only thing I can think of is driving all the way to the M50 in Dublin and down along the N11, definitely not the quickest route as the crow flies! To be driven on a Friday, planning to arrive in Aughrim about 4pm.

that's almost certainly the quickest route - long sections of motorway. The roadworks on the M50 are the main obstacle but shouldn't be too bad early-afternoon.

The more direct route would be the N80 from Athlone to Carlow then R roads Carlow-Tullow-Shillelagh-Tinahealy-Aughrim or Carlow-Hacketstown-Tinahealy-Aughrim

Don't know the N80 all that well but most of those R roads are not too bad, as long as you are comfortable driving backroads and you don't get stuck behind trucks or grannies you can make decent progress.

I go from galway to Arklow this way,

galway - Loughrea - n65 to portumna- cross the shannon- birr-roscrea N7 to north of borris in ossory - turn for balycolla/aghaboe abbey - abbeyleix - carlow hacketstown - tinahely- aughrim is the shortest route. ~3.5 hours

Moate could be a hold up and there's a 30kmh limit through Balinasloe these last few weeks on the N6.
next year N6/M4/M60/N11 will be fastest way.
