Free Windows Movie Maker Alternative?

I'm just interested in an alternative to Movie Maker just out of curiosity, really. But I'm interested in Free software. I know there is a stickied thread with suggestions but they are all costly.

All, I will be doing is cutting video clips, putting music in, having text as and intro/Credits etc. Very basic stuff.

I downloaded it but it does not seem to want to run on my computer. I keep getting fatal runtime errors..

Any other suggestions?

Buy a Mac and use iMovie?

TBH I'm not really a PC person.

Actually, my brother has a Mac but unfortunately it does not have iMovie on it. It's a Laptop that's about 3-4 years old. Can you download it again do you know?
