Look mate, I'm no church apologist, or bible basher.

Notwithstanding my choice of moniker, I've always found in interesting that we Irish are the only people who seem to shorten the name of our National Saint when refering to St. Patrick's day.

The English never say 'Georgie's Day', the Scots never say 'Andy's Day', the Welsh never say 'Davy's Day'.

Why do we do it? Just an observation.

    I'm not on a fence.

I'm opposed to people who are opposed to the movement of St Patrick's Day.

I'm not a Christian though. I don't care about religion.

    Georgie is longer than George.

Some people have a terrible chip on their shoulders about the church. They're having their celebrations on the 15th, so that it doesn't clash with some other holy festivity. They just announced it, as any large organisation would announce a change to their schedule.

They're not suggesting that anyone changes the public holiday or anything like that. What's the big deal?

Madness you say? THIS......IS.........BOARDS!!!! *proceeds to virtually kick you in the chest*

I don't see what the problem is, I really don't. It's not like Paddy's day got cancelled or anything. We got an extra day cuz the original churchiness festivities collide with the 2nd day of Holy Week. We won't see an extra day like this until 2160, I'll probably be working that time. I know nobody will be whinging on the 15th when they'll be in the pub.

And yes, we'll have Monday off, way-hey, long piss-up of a weekend!!!

Seansouth is firmly routed in the pro "moving saint patricks day" camp,

I fear it may be too late to convert him, I suspect he is spying on us, from now on I will talk in code.

Ah, come on Seanie, don't be a pedant! Ok, so it's not shorter, but you know the point I'm making.

(Is everyone around here so touchy?? This is only my second day!!)

Btw, why didn't you spell your moniker 'sean sabhat'?? Just curious.

Well very few English will even know when St Georges Day is, and there is probably quite a few who wouldn't know where is is the patron saint of either.

It's Paddy's week over hereso don't think it will effect the drinking schedule too much as the 15th and 17th shall fall into it... just more reason to get more drunk than normal on the 15th next year :D

Hmmm.. Many English consider themselves very patriotic, and I'd be surprised if the majority of them didn't know it. However, you may well be right - I'm sure if I went into some chavesque kitchen sink estate anywhere in England the local burberry wearing youth may know as much about St. George as I do!

Why not make it, y'know, Cake and Lesbians Day instead, or something? YOU HAVE THE POWER.

I gaurantee that very few of those "very patriotic" English will actually know when it is. The main reason that the Irish know when paddy's day is, is beacasue they get a day off work and go out drinking. Every other country then also knows when paddy's day is because they see anyone with the slightest connection with Ireland out drinking that day as well. The Scottish get a day off work as well, and although the Welsh don't they would still make a bit of a fuss over St Davids day. The English get no day off work, and there are very few mentions of the day in the media other than possibly showing some morris dancers doing their thing in the "...and finally" section of the news which hardly encourages any form of national pride in the day for them.

Fair point. Actually, in a funny way you've brought us back to my original point, which is our tendency to call it 'Paddy's Day', as you refered to it also. But you didn't refer to St David's Day as 'Davy's Day'!

Btw, I'm only new here, my intention is not to wind up, troll, orget into a row. I'm not picking on you, just making the observation, that's all.

But your above point is very well made, St George's day doesn't seem to have the same media profile as St. Patrick's Day.

Would probably be St Daffyd's day before they started calling him Dave or anything.

You doing fine so far. :D

I just did a quick check on the beebs website about St Georgie and most of the stories that come up are along the lines of "why does nobody celebrate it?" or "what day you on about now?" or "thats the fellow who had a dragon isn't it?".

:D Yeah, that probably sums it up.

Ps, I hope you didn't mean that I was doing fine at winding up?!!

Either way, come next March we'll have a few gargles in celebration ;)

this is maddenss!! i enjoyed the article though :) it's funny how the church decide their various important dates... i've never found out how, but am suspicious of the relation between the moon and certain times of the year...

The first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox is where Easter Sunday lies. The Roman Emperor Aurelian called December 25th "The Birthday of the Unconquered Sun", and put it right in the middle of the feast of Saturnalia which was a week long event. That date later became used for Christmas Day.

St. Patrick's day is on March 17th for, well, no particular reason I think. The Church might have thought that since it's normally in the middle of Lent that we'd all be off the beer. How wrong they were.

    From The Independent
According to historians, March 17 is considered to be the day of the saint's death and he has been officially remembered since the seventh century.

Indeed ! But then a lot of people when asked about St Paddy might respond with "Didn't he have something to do with snakes ?" Also the reason nobody celebrates St Georges day over there is cause there's no drink involved !:D
