Avoid this like the plague. It will take part of your life, make your grades fall about 15%, you could end up in front of disciplinary committees of the college and possibly turn you into a recluse.

I got out of there and got me a decent degree :-)

But you could miss out on so many things, like office humour and the countless threads about people being bored, now that they have to work or else they're just bored, either way you'll hear about it, even if they're not.Or the endless debates on evolution, religion and wars and rapists that really go nowhere. How could I live without the reassuring bitching moaning threads about ,why boys don't like me(not me obviously....well maybe) and I think I'm fat but cuddly things can be reassuring.
Where else can people post threads where even the OP isn't interested in the subject matter but just wants someone to talk to.

Nowhere else dammit, it's like being a goldfish except you can't breathe under water, fantastic.

    howrya :)

I'm going into my third year in Maynooth so i may be able to give you an answer for the Mikado soc.

Basically Mikado started life as the engineering society iirc but was gradually hi jacked and turned into a general puropse forum and society to discuss college issues from a purely student perspective along side the usual garbage that we students spout.

It also serves as a notice board and general discussion board for all other clubs and socs within the college.

Posting privelages are reserved for students and past students and can be purchased at fairs day for E2 or by contacting one of the heads of the comitee and paying them.

    as for nightlife in Maynooth

The SU: is more of a chill out bar where you head for a pint and a game of pool with your mates after lectures or if you're a science student in the 3 hours before your lab. also does a good pub lunch which is perfect for those slow days when you have 2 lectures in the morning and then have to wait till six to get home. that said pints arent the best of the best so i recomend sticking to bottles. and apart from bar exs you probably wont find yourself spending many nights in it after freshers fortnight.

the Roost is the cream of the crop IMO. spacious good pints Bavaria on tap its a students best friend.

Bradys: is another nice pub but i'm not a regular

The LA: not a bad pub by any stretch and the disco bar is the most night clubby as already mentioned but I was put off it after the stabbing incident outside it last year ( non fatal but still not a nice thing in a quiet little town like maynooth )

these are the only places i have seen fit to stagger into so I'll let more qualified people guide you through the rest of them.

hope this helped see you in september find me at the bar and I'll buy you a round.

edit: Game soc is a very good society catering for everything from LAN gaming to table top wargames to RPGs they also run a 2 day event called dominicon which draws a very big crowd and is a great chance to meet fellow gamers.

Join the rugby club....rugby club= social life...we had one groupy...or at least thats what we called her...she wasn't really though...which was probably a good thing.

Thanks for the info cherubaul, i'll take up you up on that drink.Never say no to a freebie!Anyways i'm much more of a console/handheld gamer than a PC one, but based on their website the NUIM game society seems to have a good following of console gamers as well as PC ones, so i'll defiitely check it out.

    @cherubaul

Mikadosoc doesn't serve as anything for other socs. Some socs and clubs have forums on it, but for the most part don't use it. I'll echo what Cionad said, steer clear of it.

The Games Soc is awesome. Dominicon is incredible, but we don't run Lans, that's Minds. Minds is the soc for internet / computer stuff (I think, not actually a member), I know they give you webspace and run Lans, hold talks etc.

Yeah the gym is actually pretty sweet for a free one. I was expecting a treadmill and maybe one weights machine or something :p

I might join the Games Soc this year they seem to have some good nights, also Alt Music had some deadly stuff on last year (Spinal Tap etc.) so might join them.

    Baptismal Pool?

I haven't given much thought to clubs or societies.... Maybe fencing or something else with weapons. :)

I hear that the paintball group is very expensive with regards to trips etc. Obviously there are going to be higher costs associated with it than other clubs etc but is it really THAT expensive? Does anybody know of the average cost of a trip?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 681 ✭✭✭Enemy Of Fate

Archery?Paintball?Guess i'll be joing more clubs than I though.

Same here. Friends I have there who have just finished forst year there say that when college starts back they'll be joining loads more clubs-even ones they though they'd never join. There really is a great variety. Have you ever read through the lists of the clubs and societies?

Well it is the middle of the summer, not much C&S action right now. It's pretty useful during the academic year, when there's a decent amount of traffic.

Oh yeah, I remember reading this when my computer froze(?????).
@nothing...I think 2300+ posts would dissagree.

Jeez it's hardly a huge commitment that you have to steer clear of it....and I hate that you made me do this because I always wanted to be the one to hate everyone else and laugh at them for being so ....human.
i.e. I hate when people think that I optimistically support any establishment.....whats that word again?:)

Anyway, if you can spend half an hour out of your whole week to worship God for creating the infinte beauty of existence...then surely you have 5-6 hours per day to spend complaining about toe jam to 3 people, none of which care but will amuse themselves with random pictures over the internet, despite the fact that you could probably meet and talk to these people with a five minute walk.
