Out in town last nite bout 3 ish, trying to hail a cab no joy from Wolfetone Quay to bus aras there were people trying to hail a taxi, but arond Sin e on the Quays i seen a private car stopping for punters trying to hail a taxi:confused: , and them getting in? Picture the scene its cold windy and raining in the wee hours would you get into private car knowing that your probably not going to be able to get a taxi for the guts of an hour would ya get in? Would this be considerd hitch hiking or hailing a unofficall taxi?

    Opinions Please

Maybe it was someone who knew and recognized them and decided to stopped and give them a lift.

If I was trying to hail a Taxi and a private car stopped and offered to take me wherever I was going for a fee I think I'd give it a skip tbh. It's far too dodgy these days, especially at those hours, to get into an unknown car. Far too many scams going around. You may find yourself being driven down some dark ally where a bunch of thugs are waiting and end up the victim of a terrible crime.

Hailing an unofficial taxi as you'd be paying.

I'd pass. The best case scenario I've heard so far is getting home in one piece, after a 1.75hour drive for what should have only taken 20 minutes. I've heard of too many rape cases where the victim got into a car posing as a taxi, over here. And in other countries, so many muggings... pass.
It's bad enough that we have so many 'legit' taxi drivers that don't know what they're doing and rip customers off - at least you have some comeback with them.

I was getting a taxi back to a mates house in Islington from Angel. Flagged town a taxi and so lads jumped a head of us. A few choice words were spoken.

Turns out that the taxi we flagged down has an unoffical one and the lads a head of us were the police. They arrested the taxi lad and told us to be on the watch out for fake taxi's.

So at least they are doing something about it

Have never actually seen this in Dublin but when I was in London they seemed to be everywhere. There was alos an ad cmpaign about it in the North. Too dodgy. Best case scenario is you get ripped off, worst case God knows...

How would one recognise a fake taxi? Does it have any taxi markings on it at all, like the TAXI sign on the roof or whats the scéal?

No it was a private car, with no markings just people have the hand out until any car stops, it wasnt a unnofficial taxi as in a bogus cab driver with no psv licence.

There is a great illegal taxi firm in Belfast, 6 of us got a return journey with them on saturday cost us 60 pounds, if it had of been legal would have been at least 120 and the guy came back and picked us up from where we had been at the time we asked. Altogether alot better than the legal firms.

T'is all the rage in Russia, on account of there being very little taxis and everyone needing more money. If you stick your hand out for a taxi, one or two regular cars will stop and you can negotiate a price with them if they are going your way.

Very common in London, they try to rip you off but if you know where you're going you can usually haggle them down to a good price. If I was on my own I wouldn't go near them.

surely best case scenario is they drive you to where you want to go, and at a cheaper price than a legitimate taxi would charge?
