I find hardline Catholicism difficult to stomach.
    It's very intolerant.

I find hardline anti-Catholicism equally difficult to stomach. The primary reason for anyone I know who has gotten married in Rome was to have a cheaper wedding. Sure, you can argue that there are loads of nice cities to get married but being Catholic means that Rome, which is a fantastic city, holds some more signifiance over others.

Hardline Catholicism doesn't really exist in this country any longer.

yup i agree with the above.

everyone i know whos got married abroad, not just in rome, has been to save a fortune on the wedding. its not like the brides mother can bitch about being married by the pope :D if memory serves the average marraige in this country costs between 25 to 30 grand. and quite honestly thats nuts

    I knew it.

There is a religious angle to getting married in Rome.

I think the OPs point was valid up to about 15 years, when very few went to Rome, but not any more.

Rome is the most beautiful city in Europe, and weddings there can cost a fraction of the price of a home wedding (also due to the fact that a lot less people will attend compared to a home wedding), and because it's the centre of Catholicism, that also gives people a good excuse to get married there.
But to be honest, for couples getting married nowadays, I reckon less than 10% would be practising catholics, ie. go to church every week, go to confession etc.

    Thank you.

Nice to see that someone recognises my point.
A lot of those posters swearing blindly that Rome was just 'another city'.

I'm glad you've found AH Brian.

It's so more troll-conducive than, say, the Animals and Pets forum isn't it?

I must be very buddhist

lol it's great to see your relief that you've found ONE person who was married there for the religious significance.

    Congrats

I dunno, the Mustard forum has its moments too.

I heard a very good theory recently that the Internet never makes people change their fundamental views on anything and that people only use it to reinforce the views the already have.

    QED methinks.

I'm agnostic and tbh I find the Vatican disgusting (not the art, just the acquisition and holding of such wealth whilst people in this world are starving - the definition of hypocrisy imho). Though I'd still consider getting married in Rome.

The reason for this would depending on the unlucky woman:

    1. If she's Catholic, it could be held in the Pantheon (probably a huge waiting list but hell, I don't plan a short engagement) which, although now consecrated as a Catholic Church, was originally errected as a 'temple to all gods' and imho that's a compromise I could live with.

    2. If she's not religious, Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world imho. It's far cheaper to get married there, the food is fantastic - far better than the traditional 'Beef or Salmon' of an Irish wedding and by having the wedding abroad I could be pretty certain it'd be smaller than it would be in Ireland so I'd only have the people there that mattered to me rather than half the town like you typically get in an Irish wedding.

Finally, Rome was the centre of the Roman Empire, one of the pillars of civilisation, it was a fantastic city before Catholicism even existed and to be quite honest, I believe it would possibly be an even greater city if Catholicism had never made Rome it's centre.

So what did you think of the two dogs (pit bulls I think) attacking that young boy a couple of weeks back?

    Unprovoked wasn't it?

    Try and justify that one.

I think people who choose to get married in Rome must be extremely strong Catholics with presumably right-wing religious beliefs given the close proximity of the Pope.

    It's a fair assumption that such people are probably anti-contraception, anti-divorce, anti-abortion, anti-homosexual.

Why else would they decide to get married in what effectively is the Pope's backyard?

Using that sort of logic, the only people that would want to get married in somewhere like Hawaii are surfers or fans of 'Lost', it wouldn't have anything to do with the great weather, scenery and lovely golden sanded palm fringed beaches.

Rome is a place, it just happens that the pope lives there, Paris is also popular as a wedding destination and just as you don't visit Brussels just for the sprouts  Rome has far more to recommend it than just the Vatican, not the least of which is the weather and cost.

Myself & Mrs Billy got married on a small island off the west coast. Does that make us fundamentalist céilí music fans?

We went on honeymoon to Rome, but that's because we're militant anti-pasti eaters.

I got married in Rome 2 years ago, the reasons were as follows:

    1. We wanted to organise the whole thing ourselves ie. no agents/wedding planners, Rome is ideal for this as certain churches have Irish priests running them. These guys are absolutely great and will help with organising all the essential details such as readings, family participation, as well as cars, flowers, photographers etc.

    2. We wanted to get married abroad but we didn't want to get married on a beach/in a hotel, Rome, you must admit, has a degree of gravitas about it - in fairness this related to Catholicism - it is the place to go for spectacular churches.

    3. We had our reception in a rooftop hotel watching the sun go down over the Forum and Il Vittoriano.

    4. We were thinking of beautiful Sorrento/Amalfi Coast but this would have involved a wedding planner (to overcome language difficulties) and it was easier for guests to get to Rome.

    5. Finally... we were both brought up as Catholics... ok, we don't practice but we don't have any major personal issues with Catholicism.

Getting married in Rome was the right decision for us - I'd do it again tomorrow. Can't wait to go back, great city.

    Not really no.

Some people just like getting married abroad?

Hell, some people are even from Rome and get married there.

My friend was due to get married there before he broke up with the lady friend and he isnt any of the above and either was she.

How is any of that a fair assumption?

Oh you're right there. You describe fundamentalist Christians to a tee. All they have are prejudices and no real facts to support them. Just blind faith that they're better than everyone else.

    Bit like yourself Brian.

Ffs it's Rome! Absolutely lovely city to get married in and the wedding will be a lot cheaper than anything in Ireland.

I started to read this and read about 20 posts, all the while thinking it was very familiar, before I realised it was 7 months old. Grrr!

    Baby jebus would want it.

And what of people getting married in Rome? I personally detest weddings held in the local hotel with the same speeches, photos, band, cake as every other wedding you've ever been to.

    Mix it up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,073 ✭✭✭✭Terry

Why not go the whole hog and get married in Jerusalem?

Edit: I just saw that. :)
