Mods, please move this as required. I'd have posted in health and beauty if I could find it.

Do any kind Boards users know of a non-aluminium deodorant on the Irish market? Given the breast cancer link my special one won't use her regular ones any more.

Hi, I use a crystal deodorant as regular ones make my underarms very itchy. They can be bought in any health shop. I know they sound mad hippy, but they do work - you just wet them and rub them under your arms like any deodorant.

Don't know if Jason Natural sell here but I buy their tea tree oil natural deodorant stick. Costs about £6 inc delivery from http://www.worldwideshoppingmall.co.uk/
Natural anti bacterial kills off the microbes that lead to bad BO and the fresh lemony, soapy scent of the tea tree is a bit more subtle than most fragranced aerosols or roll-ons...it lets you sweat as much as you need to but you won't smell. I think they do natural anti perspirants too, but I prefer deodorant.

[edit] Before you say "€10 for f*ckin' deodorant?!?", bear in mind that a stick lasts for ages.

I use this too, it's great. You can get them in health shops here. They actually used to be quite a bit cheaper, the first one I ever bought a few years ago was about €3/4, then the one I have now has a price tag of about €7.50, now the same one I see in shops today for about €11! Even at €11 it's well worth it. It will last and last for well over a year with every day application.

Read this to see all the benefits (also good for feet and acne it says:))

The OP was looking for aluminium free deodorant. I'm sure those rock stick thingys are good, but do you actually know what they are?
Our hypo-allergenic, natural Deo Stones are made from natural Rock Salt (Bauxite Ore)
Bauxite is the ore used to make aluminium. It is basically unrefined aluminium. Im guessing you didn't know this when you suggested the product to the OP, as its probably the worse product in terms of aluminium content. The article mentions the fact that it doesn't contain aluminium chlorohydrate, this is an aluminium compound found in some deos. The rock contains alu in a different form.

Yeah, if you read the link I provided, you would have seen this:
The Rock does not contain the recently publicised, potentially harmful chemical aluminium chlorohydrate or zirconium derivatives that many people find irritating. Because The Rock does not block pores - it does not interfere with the elimination of toxins.

    ;):)

Boots have their own brand deodorant that is aluminium free. I've tried it but I didn't think it was great, however I think sometimes products like these are user-specific.

I read the link and I already highlighted that in my post.
The rock doesn't contain aluminium chlorohydrate, I've siad this.
But it does contain aluminium. Unrefined aluminium ore. Harmful or not is wasn't what the OP asked for, and if they gave it to a person who wanted aluminium free deo, i'm sure they wouldn't be happy if they found out what was in it.

    From a quick google.

    Alum = Aluminium Potassium Sulfate

So they get the aluminium from the Bauxite and the potassium from the rock salt.

In the preparation of Alum from bauxite "the material is gently calcined, then mixed with sulfuric acid and heated gradually to boiling; it is allowed to stand for some time, the clear solution drawn off and mixed with acid potassium sulfate and allowed to crystallize".

    Now thats "natural"... ;)

prety much, in a raw form
bauxite is refined to alum, and then to aluminium, but its a tricky process, much harder than other metals which lead to aluminium being more valuable than gold in the past

Ok cool, but is alum harmful?

Haven't a clue, I don't even know what the story is with aluminium in deodrants, in what way is it harmful, to humans or the environment?

Alum is a dessicant/talc type substance afaik.
Aluminium has been linked with a lot of debilitating illnesses, notably alzheimers, but on a much larger scale due to cosmetic use, it seems to be an irritant or allergic trigger.
The compound of it used in anti-perspirants works to block pores and dry up sweat; unhealthy in itself IMO...we sweat for a reason.

The crystal rock deodorant doesn't block pores anyway:) It just neutralises the smell. You still sweat as much as you would without any on so that's a good thing (some may not think so).
