No doubt this will be mentioned in the media shortly if not already. Has this been posted on boards yet? Couldn't find it in a search.
Was emailed to me this morning along with the usual diatribe about how "no wonder the gardai are too busy when you call them up" etc etc tut tut

This was doing the rounds on IRC last night, if you look at some of the comments you will see that Mr. Campbell is referred to as being mentally challenged. If these really are Gardaí on the video then I think they will definitely get the chop.

Anyone stupid enough to film themselves doing a crap job or abusing their authority gets all they deserve imo.

I don't really see any major problem TBH. The boys are only lads at the end of the day and there's no law saying you can have a sense of humour on the job.

I'd imagine they get lots and lots of nuisance phone calls and they could just tell them to F*ck off, stop wasting garda time and hang up.

Either Brendan Campbell is a complete windup or he has more serious problems.
Which ever it is, unfortunately the Gardas did not handle the situation correctly IMO.
A simple "Sorry Mr/Brendan Campbell, the Sergeant isn't available at the moment, we'll pass on a message for you or you can ring back later" would have sufficed.
To film themselves taking the proverbial while on duty is sheer lunacy.
Losing their jobs may be a bit severe, but a final written would be expected.

I agree Kleefarr. I'm sure the gardai deal with 100s of these very "trying" calls everyday. I'm sure if Mr. Campbell was after ringing up 5 or 6 times it would become quite frustrating. Filming it for the purposes of humour is a bit unprofessional and perhaps will sully their otherwise hard work though. I'd say the gardai featured will get a rap on the knuckles for it alright, but would be stupid to sack them given we are already short of fully trained serving members of An Garda Siochana.

I'm sure the Gardai get prank calls all the time and personally I think anybody that makes them should be fined for doing so (same goes for fire service) but making a video of themselfs its just bloody thick!

Think somebody needs to have a chat to the muppet in the video and scare him abit, very unprofessional!

    'Garda' caught in YouTube sneer

    By Eugene Moloney
    Thursday June 07 2007

VIDEO footage showing what appears to be a uniformed garda making fun of a member of the public has sparked top-level investigations after it was posted on the internet.

The posting of the video on a website comes just a week after mock footage of troops firing at civilians in Liberia was also posted onto the same YouTube site.

Both the gardai and the new Garda Ombudsman commission have launched separate investigations.

The 4½-minute video shows what appears to be a clearly visible young uniformed garda taking a phone call from a member of the public and repeatedly laughing and mocking the man who requests to speak to a sergeant.

At one stage the caller, who has been put on speaker phone, asks the 'garda' to "have a bit of manners" and to stop laughing at him.

In the course of the video the 'garda' utters the man's name repeatedly and can also be seen looking at the camera and gesturing with his face as he holds the phone in front of his mouth.

Gardai said they had been aware of the existence of the filmed footage since Saturday. Supt Gerry Giblin, from Cavan station, has been appointed to investigate the matter. He will also establish whether the station involved is Kingscourt, Co Cavan, as was indicated on the video clip.

First reports indicate the footage was most likely filmed using a mobile phone and posted onto the internet after being circulated to other mobile phones in the locality.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission is also investigating the matter following a number of complaints from members of the public in recent days.

Kieran Fitzgerald, head of communications and research with the Garda Ombudsman Commission, told the programme that, on first viewing, the contents were such that an investigation by them was warranted.

Lose the tude BigTommyBomb, its obvious you fcuked up whilst trying to post the video. Your whole life long you've been blaming others for your own shortcomings.

Maybe its time you started taking some responsibility for your actions. Maybe its time you had a bit more respect. Maybe its time you had a BigTommyRealisation

Lots of people from Cavan have come out about the guy being a real nutcase. Not to mention the gardai are actually investigating this incident.

I don't think this is a N/M issue so I'm going to throw it to the wolves (read After Hours).

I've deleted davidj's comment first, though, because he seemed to suggest that the Gardaí's job is to beat up annoying or mentally disabled people. It's not, as much as some would like it to be.

Listen carefully, it is a recording, Mr Campbells Voice doesn't change, Chris Moyles does them on the radio in the UK all the time.

I'm more concerned about 'the lads' having the craic on the job.

We'll just have to wait for the lawsuit against the guards for misconduct and the subsequent letting go of the two guards.

what fecking clown would record that and put it up on the net. Surely they would watch it and no they would get in trouble.

I'd say whoever took the recording is getting his arse well and truly kicked.

Ridiculous the caller should be done for wasting police time
The media don't tell the full story at all - if you listen the man wants to speak to a Sargent to make sure the area will be patrolled properly - they make it sound way worse than it is.

How many of us can put our hands up and say we have never had a bit of craic at work ?

according to the comments below the video on that page of youtube, this Mr. Campbell is a known nuisance caller

Do you really think they wanted it up on youtube? Use your brain. Its obviously a phone job that was kept within friends and then spread.

'Listen carefully, it is a recording, Mr Campbells Voice doesn't change, '

Its called autism. And his voice does change througout if you listen.

Gardi are people too. And actually the guy on the video seems more understanding then most, even if he is taken the piss.

There is a monumental difference between us having craic at work, and the Gardaí doing the same. They should be professional. It wouldn't be tolerated in the UK police force, why should it here? Yerah sure, he was only having a laugh ...

Everyone is entitled to a bit of craic in work but when you're in such a responsible public service position you shouldnt be having that craic at the expense of a member of the public, I think it undermines all Gardaí and adds to a bad reputation when any of them does something stupid like that.
I don't think Mr. Campbell is a recording.
