I'm still not sure why people in Ireland use soccer so much, but anyway... on to the question. What is the one word description for people who's occupation is playing soccer?

Soccerer ? (a bit like Sorcerer).
    Soccerista ? (very spanish)

Since Soccer is derived from Association Football, i would say he's still a footballer?

Socceroo? Well from a certain part of the world anyway.

Im not a fan of the word "soccer" either. Never use it when talking footie with the mates, only use when I have to...talking to someone who would presume football is GAA.

    Nice question !

I personally hate the word Soccer , I only use it when GAA people are around.

    So Footballers get my vote.

It's wierd that football seems to be a generic name for a whole set of sports

    Grid-Iron ( if you call that a sport :) )
    Rugby ( both codes )
    And of course GAA

To my mind how can you call any sport where you can touch the ball with your hands football ......?

You use your hands in all codes of football. Just less so in Soccer

    errrrr

In open play 20 of the 22 players out on that field cannot use their hands.

In all other codes ( that I can think of ) all the players can handle the ball , hense the name football is grammatically incorrect.

I am open to correction here of course , I am not a ref in any of the sports mentioned.

If I had more hair I would split one :)
You use your hands in all codes of football. Just less so in Soccer

So this is only true if you are a goalie.......in other codes ALL the players can use their hands ( can't they ?? )

Isn't true that in grid iron you are actually not allowed to kick the ball except in special circumstances ?

Anyway , my vote is still footballers ( to stick to the thread )
