Mobile numbers are apparantley the big give-away. I don't care who collects the stuff though, but the fake ones never come on the days they say they do.

If you're really bothered, you're better off dropping them down to your local VdeP

Fake ones = free bin bags. :D

ya actually unless your family or friend i think its plain rude to call to someones house after 6 o clock- people are having their dinner and watching their programmes- putting their kids to bed. They just want to relax after working all day. Thats just how i feel about it:o

I hate those canvassing bastards just as much as the next guy, but the reality of it is that if they called inside normal work hours, when people are at...work...then they wouldn't get many answers to their doorbell rings, may not manage to sell their quota of paint-by-numbers canvas boards and may miss out on the golden opportunity of filching some gardening tools...

I have actually bought a painting from one of those 'cheeky ****ers'.

I couldn't help it, it was a painting of a little puppy and my little sister, aged 11, loves animals, especially dogs, and especially puppies!! :o

You should have hit the bloke. Alot of them foreigners dont respect our culture at all by ringing the doorbell 100 times thinking its OK. He was probably scoping out the place to see what he could rob.

If that was me he would've been lying on the ground the time the bell was rung 3 times!

HaHa .. Yeah the Irish are far more polite, they only ring the bell once or twice, then sneak around the back and break in. God I wish it was like the old days, when Anto the junkie was trying to steal all your belongings. :D

FYI, it is true that the majority, if not all of the "clothes in a bag" things are scams. If you get one, and feel compassioned to give some of your old clothes - bring them directly to a charity shop.

    K, bitches?

You should get a bunch of old paintings and keep them just inside your door. Then the next time someone comes round trying to sell you something, jump the gun and try and sell them your artwork. Should be interesting.:D

    ROFL :D

BTW Everybody goes on about "Romanians". They are mostly a section of Roma gypsy that the Romanians themselves take issue with. In fact they hate the association. I even met one Roma gypsy bloke who was well píssed off at being compared to this group of buggers. It's like comparing a really dodgy subsection of traveller society and calling them Irish.

That said I once had a very hot girl of Polish extraction try to sell me "her" paintings. Jeez the temptation to buy was strong in me.:D

I've simply given up making this point on boards. You'll quote an OP's post about the "Romanian beggars/thieves" etc and make a friendly point about the distinction between Romanian and Roma.

In the very next post the OP will say...."Yeah so anyway, those Romanian bastards!......" :D and so will most of the following posters:rolleyes:

Most of the "Roma" don't even come from Romania. There are big populations of Roma in most Eastern European countries. The ones we have here are more likely to be Roma from Poland, Czech Rep, Slovakia etc.

And before the PC crowd pile in. I have no doubt that most Roma in Europe are like a lot of our travellers. Unfairly discriminated against because of the actions of a small sub section of their community.

Heres the thing though. The advance guard of Roma that came here in the last few years were obviously almost exclusively of the begging, criminal scam artist variety. I have not met a single Roma here that hasn't tried to beg, steal, scam me.

Everytime time I read a story in the papers warning the elderly to be careful answering the door to beggars because of some "Eastern European" mother begging at the door while the kid sneaks in the back etc.

Its always a fecking Roma not a generic "Eastern European!!

Big gang of "Eastern Europeans" coming into a shop and distracting the shopkeeper while the shelves are emptied or the back stores ransacked?

Its always a fecking Roma not a generic "Eastern European!!

Eastern Europeans begging and selling the big issue?

Its always a fecking Roma not a generic "Eastern European!!

"Eastern European" kid knocking on doors with fake Wheelchair association Sponsorship cards?

Its always a fecking Roma not a generic "Eastern European!!

"Eastern European" skimming or scamming money off people at atms?

Its always a fecking Roma not a generic "Eastern European!!

They're giving eastern Europeans a bad name! because the papers are never more specific than "Eastern European".

That said I do understand why they can't be more specific because I know you can't tar an entire community with the criminality brush. Like I said I don't tar the whole Pan European Roma community with this brush but from personal experience I can't help but tar almost the entire Irish Roma community with that brush in my own head.

At this stage I can read between the lines when reading a news story about Eastern European crime. I know when a story involving Eastern Europeans involves drunken driving or no car insurance or drugs or a stabbing etc that the story probably is refering to a generic Eastern European/Eastern European Gangster/thug. When I read stories like those earlier in my post I know the profile points to a Roma in all likelyhood.

    Fair play, i must say...
People like that come calling to my door all the time and they don't leave if they know someone is in the house... they come in groups in my area though so I'm always quite cautious about them putting a brick through my window or something... i hate them

    hmm classy....

in the first instance the only thing he did wrong was ring the door bell alot which of course is rude, but is it enough to treat him like a piece of dirt and threaten to punch him? nice lady...
i think you getting your lawn mower stolen might've been a good lesson.

Yep I've had this ringing the doorbell off the wall crap. Well out of order. They've done it way later than 7 too. The latest I had was one fella at 10.30. I've had them even come around on Christmas day looking for handouts. Christmas day FFS!! Needless to say I was less than charitable in my attitude and coarse language and threats were proffered by way of compensation for my distress.
You were less than charitable to someone who had taken time out of their Christmas to raise money for others? Christmas day, right smack bang in the middle of the 'Season for Giving'?
