Ok this evening (7/7.30ish) i was at home- boyfriend was at the cinema/ housemates were out and i had my 6 month old niece with me-I was taking care of her for the evening to give my sister a much deserved meal out with her partner.

Got the baby to sleep and popped into the loo- and someone rang the doorbell. Not being gross but i was on the loo at this stage so i though"they can wait a minute. Bell rang again- then again(each like a second after each other) so headed down the stairs and then the person banged hard on the door then pressed the bell and held on to it.

At this stage the baby was woken up and started SCREAMING so i ran up to calm her down(Loud bell must have frightned her its one of those really loud ones that u can hear through the whole house.) Meanwhile the bell was dinging away- so i went downstairs with a screaming baby in my arms and answered the door. There was a foreign guy outside finger STILL on the bell with a big smirk on his face.

This was the conversation(now remember i was VERY pissed off at this stage)

Him- "Oh hello i am selling these paintings...

Me "WHAT?

Him " i am selling these paintings..."

Me- "ITS GONE 7 O CLOCK IN THE EVENING HOW DARE U CALL AT THIS HOUR"

hIM "Im sorry but i am selling.......

Me- NO IM NOT INTERESTED- DO YOU NOT SEE IVE A SCREAMING BABY IN MY ARMS- AND YOU WOKR HER UP- ARE YOU GOING TO PUT HER BACK TO SLEEP FOR ME?

Him-"Im sorry i didnt know...."

Me" YOU DIDNT KNOW WHAT-THAT AT THIS HOUR NORMAL PEOPLE ARE HAVING THEIR DINNER AND GETTING THEIR KIDS OFF TO SLEEP AND U COME ALONG AND HOLD ON TO BELLS TILL THEY ANSWER THE DOOR AND WAKE UP THEIR KIDS(all in one breath)

Him- "I will go

Me" ya u will and next time u call here ill punch you"

and i slammed the door(I know it was a bit mean but i was furious hed held on to the bell for so long out of pure ignorance.

About a half an hour later i started to feel a bit guilty

About 9 my housemates came back from town- I was upstairs changing the baby as my sister was due to pick her up.All of a sudden i heard yelling and banging. I went downstairs(baby in arms) and there was what looked like a fight outside the garden.

That guy i had ran from the door earlier was in our garden and my housemate had seen him hop over the gate and try to make off with our lawn mower(a lawn mower of all things?)

Called the cops on the cheeky ****er- So much for feeling guilty about yelling at him. Cheeky bastard!

You should have hit the bloke. Alot of them foreigners dont respect our culture at all by ringing the doorbell 100 times thinking its OK. He was probably scoping out the place to see what he could rob.

If that was me he would've been lying on the ground the time the bell was rung 3 times!

Hey come on now guys, the red font is gone. And seriously something needs to be done about these romanian paint-selling lawnmower-stealers, taking over the country so they are

I remember a time when honest Irish lads were able to make their way in the world selling paintings and stealing lawnmowers. Now the foreigners have it all tied up. It's a fuggin' disgrace is what it is!

ya actually unless your family or friend i think its plain rude to call to someones house after 6 o clock- people are having their dinner and watching their programmes- putting their kids to bed. They just want to relax after working all day. Thats just how i feel about it:o

7 O'Clock and someone called at your door, jesus christ. 6.30 is tearing the arse out it for me, if it was 7 I would give them a hammer to the face. You didn't buy his paintings, it's YOUR fault he needed to steal the lawnmower.
Do you have proof that this even happened?

The poor lad was probably starving, because he can't sell his paintings because people get angry at him for ringing their doorbells past mid day.

When did our culture become punching people who call to your door?
He didn't ring the bell 100 times, or three times. He rand just once, he just didn't stop.

There's a thread somewhere, possibly consumer issues, which states this "paintings" are prints mass produced in China.
Did this lad realy do the paintings himself? Sounds like a scam.

God help the canvassers who call to your door in the next few days OP

No-one does it like the Simpsons:

Mr. Burns: This anonymous clan of slack-jawed troglodytes has cost me the election, and yet if I were to have them killed, I would be the one to go to jail. That's democracy for you.

put a sign outside the door..

I'm not saying you should have too, just do it anyhow.

I'm not arsed with anyone/sales person coming to my door, I don't think I've ever thought 'wow, I'm glad they called!'.

Hmm... Let me get this straight, some guy started ringing the doorbell constantly, woke up a baby, banged on the door a lot, all in aid of asking someone to buy his paintings. Then, when he didn't get what he wanted, went to steal their lawn mower, and started a fight with someone else who lived there?

Got that right?

Then, the person this happened to, starts a thread on boards about it, obviously frustrated, and gets hassled for it?

Gotta love the priorities people on boards have sometimes... Fighting, stealing, harrassing people, that's all fine. Just don't come on boards and vent about it happening to you! No sir, we don't tolerate that around here.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

These people are always calling to the door.

I let the bell ring and didn't bother answering it the other day, trying to avoid election crap you see, but it rang again so I figured it was actually somebody who knew us.

It wasn't, it was another crappy foreign art students selling their crappy paintings. Before he said a word I told him I wasn't going to buy anything and just said bye. It what I always do. I'm not going to buy one no matter what he says so why waste both of our time.

He didn't however steal my lawnmower.

You should get a bunch of old paintings and keep them just inside your door. Then the next time someone comes round trying to sell you something, jump the gun and try and sell them your artwork. Should be interesting.:D

Something similar happened me the other day, the guy kept his finger on the bell, and not knowing who it was, I frantically cleaned up my kitchen, which resembled a crack house.

Turned out to be some Romanian, who shoved a badly photocopied sponsorship sheet in my face. It was stamped by the Irish Wheelchair Assoc. I told him to hop it, but he actually put his foot in the door to stop me from closing it.

God rid of him eventually (the stare of death) and rang the IWA, the said they are getting calls all over the shop about it. Total scammers.

He had loads of sponsorships on the card too - scumbag.

Anyone who double rings a doorbell/double or more/keeps finger on doorbell, unless they are on fire, or a friend of yours, who happens to be on fire, they deserve to be bludgeoned.

If he had the foot in my door stopping me closing it I'd be going under the stairs for the hefty set of socket wrenches to see if he still wanted the door kept open any longer... That's just not on!
