i recently bought a philips wireless router but it doesnt have an internal dsl modem in it. can i connect the router to the my dsl modem without having to have a server pc connected to the wireless router through a cable? I ask this becuase when i try set up my router it needs a internet connection but my pc is upstairs & my modem is down stairs (i'm just after getting broadband). any suggestions?

Connect the Internet/Uplink port of the wireless router to the ethernet port of the router, you don't need a pc there.

Best to put the modem in bridge mode, much easier to setup.

Following the steps in part 5 of the FAQ and see how far you get.

i got as far as the ping www.google.com part but it seemed to time out

Well as the FAQ says, you have a problem with your DNS. Basically this means that your router can't resolve www.google.ie into it's ip address, and so is unable to connect to it. You need to configure the router with the correct DNS servers for your ISP.

oh & on the prevoius step i pinged 66.102.9.104 & i got a response but it said destination unreachable

in that case it's not ur DNS, you just can't connect beyond your router. How have you configured router settings?

You want to put the modem in bridge mode and configure router with the PPPoE settings etc for your ISP (username, etc).
