What do you think of the EP lineup?

I am a bit disappointed by this year's lineup. The only standout acts are Modest Mouse and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. The previous years always had some decent alternative acts (Nick Cave, Massive Attack) alongside some quality dance DJs/acts (Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim).,

Look at this year's headliners, Bjork and The Beastie Boys. I'd be curious to see them live but they certainly are very alternative. I can't see them living upto or having the same pull are previous headliners. The rest of the festival's is even further left of centre.

Frankly it's a bit of a let down and I am considering not going.

What do you think of the lineup for EP 07? 33 votes

Great. The picnic has gone from strength to strength

Daft Punk are not playing EP. You really should look around more. There's a 5 page thread in this forum that gives you a lot of info.

Found that thread, and edited above response

its ok, nothing spectacular, im going to a festival in eurpoe featuring bjork and beastie boys, but neither would be a "seller" for me if you know what i mean. modest mouse, sonic youth and primal scream should be entertaining enough anyways. im sure they will ad a few more acts along the same standard, espeically if they see the sales not exactly rocketing.

It really depends what music you are into. I had this same conversation with a friend of mine who was going mad looking for a ticket to the other festival cause the line up for the EP wasn't great.. But I think the line up is brilliant cause there are so many acts that I like on the bill. Bjork, Beasties, LCD Soundsysytem, Jamie Lidell, Marlena Shaw among others.. And when I look at the other festivals line up I think its just OK. Arcade Fire being the one amazing act I would really go mad to see.

Thats why the Picninc caters for such a limited number because they know that the music they put on won't be to everyone's liking. And long may it continue in that vein. But the last three years I have always stumbled across a band that I had never heard of and loved since. First year it was Matthew Herbert and last year the Young Blood Brass Band blew me away all together and I expect someone else to do the same this year.

It does exactly what its meant to do. Its not meant to be a massive name lineup its meant to be an alternative to other festivals not a remake of them.

True but in previous years they had some real up and coming artists (Arcade Fire before they got really big) alongside the alternatives acts who wouldn't necessarily play big festivals (Nick Cave). The dance lineup was stronger in previous years too (Royksopp, Kraftwerk etc.)

I suppose the music is subjective to your tastes but if you look at the lineup of rival festivals in Europe you can see what a really decent alternative lineup can be.

Bjork is playing?BJORK.And you say its a disapointment? We are taking the piss here right?

Anyway the Beasties are good live as well, I might go, depends on the finances.

I think it's a great lineup, and I haven't been too fond of previous EP lineups, so to me they're on the right track. :)

Bjork and Beastie Boys haven't played here in years, so they're a nice breath of fresh air from what we're used to re: headliners. And I haven't seen The Chemical Brothers before so (if they're playing) it's all good.

Personally I think it's a great lineup. A lot of great bands on there that I would go to see by themselves so I'm really looking forward to seeing them all (or as many as I can make it to) over the course of one weekend.

And remember - the lineup isn't finalised yet so there's more to come both big and small.

So who in your eyes is missing?

I'm was at the EP with CAve and the arcade fire- great shows. Looking forward to wilco (fingers crossed) Modest mouse, sonic youth and a host of others this year. I'm delighted that it's left of centre as you described as you don't see the same ***** year in year out at it. I really don't see what your point is?

its distinctly average so far imo

    more to come tho

I don't mind the price (within reason, of course) if there's enough bands playing that I want to see. Last year I didn't think €175 was worth it for the acts on offer, though I did see the vast majority of them at Pukkelpop two weeks earlier.

It's a great line up, I've gotten some albums of the bands I'm not familiar with and they're class! Huge thumbs up!

It's slightly above average IMHO, mainly due to the Beastie Boys.
I always got the feeling that EP was more about the event than the music, It's about being there and taking in the atmospher and buzz. I really enjoyed last year, Averaged about 4 or 5 shows a day, spent the rest of the time in the other areas.

Where as the some other festivals are all about the music. There are no other selling point for it.

I got tickets to Glastonbury where most of the big bands that are playing the other Irish festival will be playing so I'm happy enough to go EP and see bands and artists that would generally have more cult followings instead of bands which have mainstream popularity and are brought in by the big festivals specifically to sell tickets. I'm being a bit cynical though. At the end of the day I'm just delighted I wont have to go to the other Irish festival to see the bands I like. And one more the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain have to be seen to be believed, roll on EP :)

that only ever lasts for so long

and as we saw from the difference between last year and 05, its on the slippery slope in that respect already

If you think it's a bad line-up you obviously don't know enough of the acts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,098 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

But....Bjork & THE BEASTIE BOYS are headlining, you must be crazy.

Quality line up this year. Very alternative and caters for everything really, no matter what you're into and you look around a bit

PLUS, it guarantees that it'll be a completely jonner-free zone and obviously its an amazin festival in general to boot

Honestly these kids don't know a true genius. Its as if they don't realise Bjork is in fact a god who should be worshipped by all.The woman's been head and shouldors above every musical artist since Army of Me.

Honestly you'd be crazy to turn your nose up at this.

ffs - this far into the thread and I can't believe that no picnic goer has made the point that it's about a lot more that the music!!

hell, some of the best music I heard last year was made by about 30 people hitting a metal fence at about 5am on the last night. They got a good old dance tune going and had about a hundred people bopping along and loads of people in the campsite wondering what the hell was happening.

If something like that had happenned at the festival that shall remain nameless, the security twats would have had their knickers in a twist.

Not to mention the fact that the guys that organise EP know it's not all about the headliners and provide things like... big comfy tents with couches in them that you can just chill out in, you don't have to buy something! Or the butane rocket powered smoothie maker to entertain us all!

I'm looking forward to it a lot. The one band I really want to see is Modest Mouse, so I hope they aren't a dissapointment. Other than them there are 6 or 7 other acts that I'm pretty happy to see. I actually prefer it this way, there's no pressure to see any of the acts so you can meander about the place until you find something you like. Less hectic.

Some good bands at it, but bjork and the beastie boys headlining!!!. They havent exactly been selling many records over the past few years. Bjork last few cds sank without trace sales wise. Its no surprise it hasnt sold out quickly. They need a lot more quality bands to sell out especially at that quite high price

Thats no different to last year- my friends all got tickets in JUne last year as they were still on sale

You know Im not too sure why Im trying to convince people of something theyve already made their minds up on. I'm going and by all accounts 32,000 other people will be as well. However I think that I'll give it one more shot.

I can see how on paper the lineup does look underwhelming if you just associate the names with maybe a hit 10 years ago or a couple of minor upcoming songs on phantom or whatever. What you need to realise is the bands are chosen for their live performances. They've a great selection of bands who excel live. This is the constant throughout the lineup and has been the constant throughout the Electric Picnics history. When looked at from that light this years lineup makes perfect sense. They couldnt have done much better considering their budget without rethreading previous years.

So yeh Beasties and Bjork may not have released a good album in 10years but who cares when you know that the entire festival will be filled with energetic and spectacular performances including theirs.
