hard drive / quiet S.M.A.R.T. configuration tools

    Hi
    one of my hard drives is pretty noisy when is spins up (Samsung 250GB Spinpoint SATA, SP2504C). Im using Vista MCE.

    I seem to recall there being configuration tools (S.M.A.R.T.) where you can control the spin-up, spin-down time, maybe rotation speed, monitor temperatures etc, and so make the drive quieter. I've had a google and looked on the samsung site but seen nothing obvious.

    it is a lot noisier than another samsung sata drive i have, it's working fine it just kind of hums. i think i quietened the other one a while back using a tool as described but i can't remember the details.

    any of you know what i'm talking about, can you help?

    Samsung has a DOS utility that allows you perform diagnostics and change the noise/performance level.

    I'm afraid that changing settings won't be any good to you if it's the constant hum of the drive spinning that's bothering you.

    The acoustic settings on a drive are there to balancing noise/performance while reading/writing. So you might be able to reduce the noise the drive heads make when it's working but you certainly can't change the spin speed or anything like that.

    yeah it hums badly (well a lot more than the other drive) even when idle, when i unplug it the pc is almost silent...
    searched for a few reviews and it seems to be a known problem with that type of drive

    i guess if i can't get used to it i can get some sort of acoustic mounting or just find an excuse to change it - i know it sounds petty but it is annoying me slightly...

    el b - i'll check that out for what it's worth - though i think i tried it at the weekend and it didn't work in Vista
