2x512mb RAM Vs 1x 1GB Ram

I am looking to change my machine on certain system specs i see the memory is 2x512mb and on others its 1x1gb what is the difference if any in performance other than 2 chips versus 1 on the motherboard

It does depend on what type of ram you have, some types need to be in pairs.

For the most part, however, the only reason someone would buy 2x512MBs instead of 1x1GB is that they're cheaper. Twice as much room for putting the transistors in = cheaper manufacturing.

If you end up getting 2x512s, when you come to upgrading the RAM, chances are you're going to have to pull out one of those 512 sticks to replace it with a new stick. Bit of a waste. If you have 1 1GB stick, you can just add a new stick whenever, no wastage.
