Ok so I've been out of the country for a while now, whats the general price for a pint of say Carlsberg in Dublin? Around €5 maybe? What about spirits with mixer, say vodka and sprite? About €6? I have to go back in the summer so I may as well know so that I dont get too much of a shock!

I was asked to pay 5.50 for a bottle of Miller before....

    I hate this country...

Suburban pubs about 4.50 for a pint of big brand beer. Town pubs have hit over the fiver barrier for normal price. Same in the clubs. Disgrace.

That equates to €9.46 for a pint, the main reason I never buy long necks in pubs, and why 500ml bottles of good quality strong german/czech beers are excellent value.

What irritates me more than the prices is the selection as in every single bar in Ireland p[retty much has taps with Buid/Heiniken/Miller/Smithicks/Guiness etc.. Branch out a bit lads..

Can you breakdown what exactly you spend the €100 on? That seems excessive.

Didn't realise the prices had gone that crazy since I left
Glad I live here, €3 for half litre of quality beer in my local and also €3 for a half litre bottle of Budvar. I remember paying around €5-€6 at home for that same bottle a few years back!

And how much does alcohol abuse, from people fighting outside pubs to dying of liver disease in hospitals, cost this country? Disgrace.

they're abusive because of the high prices they pay! it's a vicious cycle don't ya know

Its not just the high prices that piss me off,its the generally unpleasant service that accompanies it.Standing for ages at the bar being ignored while a smart-arse barman serves some bird ahead of you.No please, thank you or kiss my arse, and teh change usually dumped into a puddle of slops on the bar rather than put into your hand. The biggest stinker of them all is this trick of banging teh prices up at 11 o'clock or whatever time it is,knowing you've probably had a few and the chances are you're in a round with somebody and you arent going to say "**** this i'm not paying that".THEN after you've been raped all night you wanto go to the toilet and there's a moocher standing there expecting you to pay him for handing you a bit of bog roll!

What does that have to do with the thread?

I was making an ironic point, that we see the price of booze as being a disgrace when the price of boozing is so high.

Further you go from the cities the cheaper it is.

pint of heineken + pint bottle of bulmers in dublin = >€10
same in kerry: i got more than €2 change!

It would be interesting to see how much booze costs the government weighed against how much it earns them actually.
I would suggest people seek out the cheaper places as much as possible. They can only charge what people are willing to pay.

We earn more, but that's why the price of booze is so "disgraceful". One of those viscous cycles. Though I daresay if you've ever got a knock off of a drunk when the pubs close, or had one puke all over your shoes (they were f***ing nice shoes) you might begin to think outside the box of simple euros spent and euros earned.

Was a student in Cologne last year. Ok students tend to do everything as cheaply as possible, but I had many a great night out for well under €20, which includes transport home and a drunken kebab. Drinking in pubs/clubs is cheaper there but the main thing was buying beer from shops. Could get 6 330ml bottles of really nice beer for €3.50, which is what I used to go for. Cheaper again if you get the 500ml bottles. If you really want to be cheap you could get 6 500ml bottles of piss, but it was drinkable, from lidl for €2. Actually they sell this beer in Lidl here. In Germany it's called Bergadler premium pils but here it's not called Bergadler, some other name. Exact same bottles (dark brown glass). €7

500ml beers in the bars in the city were €3.50, not amazingly cheap but far better than Dublin. Never used to buy that many drinks in clubs, mostly from kiosks outside. Loads of cool small pub/clubs you could hop from and the street they were on was always full of people. Just go to a kiosk, get a beer and hang out on the street. Was great during the summertime. 100% legal and you can drink your beer in front of the bouncers before you head in to a club and they won't care. Afterwards just get a €2 kebab and then head back home on the 24 hour tram system, was free for students. Quality.

So 11 alcoholic drinks consumed over what period of time? Not critising you or anything, just curious.
