    Right,

just got sky digital and everyone I have talked to (sky installer, tony from satellite.ie and various random people) says that if I want to get Sky+ that I'll need to run two cables from my dish to the box. Why can't I run one cable and then split the cable at the box?? (as I say I know it won't work, from what I'm told, I just want to get my head around it)

(I have a few questions which I think are all different, so for the sake of sanity, I'm going to split them up into different threads, mods feel free to merge them if that makes more sense)

The Sky+ box actually has two seperate decoders in it, and each requires it's own link to the dish, therefore two seperate cables are needed. I found the handiest thing to do is to just tie them both together using cable-ties or whatever you fancy and just route them together that way. It keeps them nice and neat at the very least.

The tuner can put the LNB in to one of 4 modes (think of the LNB at dish as the front part of a radio with the wave/band change). This involves 13V or 18V and a 22kHz tone on or off. So if you split the cable one or both receivers could get no channels. (#1 has 13V and Tone On, and #2 has 18V and Tone OFF is the worst combo).

You need a Quad output LNB on the dish arm. It just plugs on instead of regular one and the exsiting Sky box can be for all the BBC an ITV on 3rd connection without a card.

Thanks for that both of you, its nice to know why you need two cables.
