Someone feel free to correct me, but I think Thomann do have a "brick-and-mortar" store in Germany, so I wouldn't justify Irish prices by virtue of the fact taht they have those extra overheads to take care of. To be honest, at this point, I buy all my little odds and ends in bulk on eBay and such places, any guitars tend to come from online vendors too. Only my acoustic and my seven-string have I bought here, and the seven-string was second-hand, not from a shop. All in all, taking into account deals and negotiations and buying online, I'd say I've saved maybe 3000-3500 on gear, rough estimate.

Well selling to all of Europe means economies of scale that Irish stores can't avail of.

    Yeah, fair point alright.

We've gone way off topic anyway but the high prices for musical equipment is just one more aspect of the high prices for almost any good in Ireland.

If you use the uk cyber store does it charge you 17.5 vat instead of 21% vat if you live in ireland?
    Has anyone tried this?

Last time I discussed tax issues here, I was temporarily banned. Then again, that might be because Feylya just hates me for not playing Ibanez guitars. Either way, prepare to be branded a criminal/tax-evader/time waster/whatever.

Feyla plays an ibanez? Rawk. :p

No, I do not play Ibanez. Bratach Bán, as I explained before, you were banned because you were coming up as a duplicate account.

Jonakin, do not discuss tax evasion on this forum.

K'n'B Music in Maynooth - Never heard of them. Anyone else been there?

Monastery Music -Clondalkin -Never heard of them either. Anyone else?

Perfect Pitch - I've always though them a little snobby. Poor selection of electrics, decent acoustics, but its a small shop.

TBH you'd be better of going to london and do some shopping around. Shops like http://www.chandlerguitars.co.uk/ can have decent 2nd hand stock if you dig around, and properly set up, unlike most of the shops in Dublin.

I bought an epiphone from thomann there a while back. Good shipping times, no hassle... Only problem really was I asked for NO letters/newsletters and I'm still getting their catologue every few weeks. :P

Yeah, I always had you pegged a bit classier then an ibanez player. Not that there's anything wrong with the guitars, just that they lack a bit of the aul pedigree of the old boys club.

Yes, I only pay Japanese or handmade instruments these days </snooty>

Not to thread jack, but like Feyla I also play an Ibanez, because it's a modern design, with modern equipment. I can't stand Strats and Teles, they're like farm equipment by comparisson.

Back OT, I placed yet another order with Thomann this morning, and was delighted to see that I can now specify my work address for Deliveries, and while it's possible to go to every online store in Europe to save 20 Euro, I'm just fond of Thomann, and the way they've yet to screw anything up for me.

Yeah, Thomann rule. They do free shipping if your order is over €200, which is always very tempting. Plus they send you a text to let you know when your order has been shipped.

Speaking of shipping, I've 2 parcels in transit to me. The reference numbers Thomann gave me neither work in dhl's site, nor in deutsche post's site. Any idea's on how I'd track and trace from your own experiences?

The music shop mentioned above in Dun Laoghaire - In Tune Music - is reasonably good as I have posted here before. To be clear, I have no connection with teh shop at all. Last time I was in there they had the Thomann price right on the price sticker for comparison purposes. This was on a range of Epi and Gibson LPs and SGs. So at least they know who they're competing with.
Having said all that the only thing I have ever bought there is plectrums and strings.
They own the shop in Bray too.

    so wait a minute
if i order something for 400 euro are they going to tag on the 21% VAT that the government charge?
if thats the case then id probably prefer to but it in a shop as the price would be pretty similiar by then

Shipping costs to Ireland are 15 EUR - we now offer free shipping on all orders above 199 EUR. Minimum purchase is 25 EUR. All prices in our Irish International Cyberstore include 21% Irish VAT, 30-day money-back guarantee and our 3-year warranty.

got the wrong product delivered to me today.. ive emailed them they appear to take a while to get to you.. anyone had to return a product to them or anything.. how much did it cost you etc? I always feel that this is their error and they should pay for their mistake not me but i dont know my rights on this topic. Ill probably return the product and get my money back if the shipping back is not cheap or free..

I placed an order with Thomann last week for PA gear to the tune of €3000. As I had a new credit card (lost the old one  ) they asked me for a copy of the card and some ID. The mail requesting this information recommended that I blank out the middle eight numbers and the CVS number on the back - which I did with MS Paint after scanning the card.

The stuff got shipped today - I've never had the wrong stuff delivered, but after reading a few of the previous posts I'll be crossing my fingers.

I thought they had stopped all that clowning around looking for scans of credit cards?

^^ They have, but I think if you order an amount of 'substantial' value then they request the credit card info - but only the first time. If I was using my previous card then there would have been no need for the details to be sent.

Quote from the email the sent me:

Sorry, but due to high value and nature of items ordered we would need further card confirmation to proceed.

    We would ask you to provide us with a copy of the front and back of your card to prove that the card has not been cloned, along with some form of identification, examples of accepted I.D. would be;

    1. A Copy of a photo drivers license
    2. A Copy of your passport
    3. A Copy of the header of your credit card statement or Utility bill showing your address details

Please note both the copy of the card and ID are needed to proceed with the order, understandably we do advise customers to blank out the middle 8 numbers on the card, along with the CVC code on the back to avoid any concerns regarding Fraud.

If they're at fault, its their responsibility to cover any charges.

It's been said already, but they are a shower of dumbasses when it comes to answering emails (they admit as much on their site), so if you have a problem with your order, pick up the phone and sort it out that way (get them to ring you back as well, i wouldnt pay for a long conversation to germany because of their f*** up.

I would absolutely insist that they send the right stuff straight away, without waiting for the returned stuff to reach them.

They'll sort it out, they have to, but it will be a pain in the ass getting it done.

Plonkers - they delivered my pallet to Tallow in Waterford instead of Tallaght in Dublin. How did they figure that? I rechecked all the info I supplied them and it's 100% correct! I suppose it's possible that Deutsche Post/DHL made a mess of it.

And there was me hoping I'd have it for the jam tonight...........Ah well......

I used them a lot in my student days when i didnt trust myself with a credit card:D

No probs at all. You email or ring them, tell them what youre looking for and they get it in from one of the big german places at a wholesale price.

The main difference from thomann is just your dealing with someone here. If there is a f*ck up with the order, or it gets damaged, you just dont pay them. Also, you collect the stuff from their office on the quays rather then have it sent to the door.

They need a 10% deposit if they dont know you, or if its a mega expensive thing, which is fair enough. Apart from that, you dont pay them til it turns up, and of course they actually answer their emails
