It is. My sister was a volunteer during the Special Olympics and heard it played several times during medal ceremonies.

Quite likely she did but the only ceremonies held at Croke Park were the opening and closing ones, medal ceremonies were held on site of the event, no sporting events took place at Croke Park so would be a bit idiotic to haul the athletes up to an empty stadium to present them with medals. GAA have confirmed that Eddie O'Sullivan was wrong, anthem has never been played there.

Think the Guards will be prepared for the worst this weekend and there will be no problems.

As for the issue of God Save the Quenn, I do find this offensive but in anti-royal way rather than anti-British, but thank God none of that shower will be there, bunch of sponging toffs ;o) The only people who object to this silly, pompous song being played would probably find it hard to fill the viewing area in the handball court at Croke Park, never mind the stadium itself. It's only a game and we should extend the same courtesy to the English team and fans as we would to any other nation and that includes flying their flag and playing their anthem

Thought u where talking about GSTQ there! Lol. They are quite similar. I don't like when English soccer fans sing GSTQ during matches either, because it is irrelevant and violent. Most anthems are from another era and the language is outdated but they do have their purpose and identity.

You cannot be King or Queen in England and be Catholic. It is believed that Tony Blair is waiting until he resigns as PM to become a Catholic. Mad, but this is a reality in England today. We have a proud history of Protestant Heads of state.
Despte this England should be welcomed. U can't blame all English people for some ignorant laws and attitudes of some.

I've heard nobody will be allowed inside the cordoned area on Sat without a ticket. It's after the match I would be worried. People in pubs all day leaving at 7/8 o'clock. I can see a fantastic occasion and stadium being ruined by some alcohol enhanced so called republicans.

This may be a stupid question..but with all the hype and protests and the fact that its about sport, everyone knows what countries they are going to see etc...

why don't they just get the game off without the anthems?

The result would be no protests, and no excuses for anyone to cause any trouble. No debates, and who gives a f*k etc...

I don't know, I'd have issues with the Irish anthem not being played before an Ireland game, and equally with the English anthem. I don't see why these muppets should be given any time or energy tbh. "Playing the English anthem will be inviting them to come back and invade us again" or something like it was said by someone on Questions & Answers. Idiocy tbh.

Fair enough, never saw the significance myself of anthems at games.
Feels a bit silly really, sorta like those pubs where they they have sing songs and your trollied out of your bin but they make you stand for an anthem.
    Maybe thats just me though.

All I want is an intact stadium and intact heads, I couldn't really care less who claims victory outside of the match itself.

I'm the same really, I just consider the anthems being sung as an emotional and important part of the game. Similar to the anthem being played at a medal ceremony at the Olympics etc.

If you actually cared about the rugby, beating them in the match would do so much more damage to them than booing a bloody sing song.

So we should let them riot out of principle? And, I down't know if it's been said before, but is Irelands Call being played, or is it the Anthem that will be played?

What a blummin fuss this is causing.

All the Irish are debating ad-blummin-nauseum. Can't believe its even being discussed on Questions/Answers - whether God Save the Queen shoudl be played - ffs ! Thought that was a serious program !

Truth of the matter is the following:

    1. Very few people in England are aware of any fuss at all going on with this. Most wont even be interested in 6 nations and wouldn't give a hoot if England won or lost. (football would be a different matter)

    2. Ireland will (and should) beat England convincingly looking at form etc.

    3. ..then Irish people will rejoice in getting one over the mighty oppressor (ZZzzz). Hopefully this will satisfy some of the ra heads that some sort of revenge has been achieved and they'll go back in their boxes (until next time!) ?

    4. Worst outcome would be any sort of trouble (and to a lesser extent booing) - this game will then be very high profile (on news etc) and Ireland will be seen in a very bad light affecting tourism etc.

To be honest the best outcome for all concerned would be an Irish win with no trouble (although I will wet my pants if England win !)

Whoever wins, hopefully a trouble free enjoyable day of 6 nations rugby ahead.

As if you lot going on about the French, Germans, 1966, Tim Henman et al doesn't drive us all demented.

At least we have a moral reason to be slightly annoyed with ye.

I think then the morons would just find something else to protest about. It's the Ian Paisley effect. No matter how much you give into bigots' demands, it's never enough. They'll always want more.

The Garda have officially announced that there'll be a strict security cordon around Croker. No vehicles will be allowed in, and no-one without a ticket (excepting residents I assume) will be allowed past the cordon. Everyone will be searched going through the cordon, and anything which could be used to "cause injury" will be confiscated - including air horns, beer/liqour bottles, etc.

For everyone else reference, there are a number of protests organised for tomorrow at Mountjoy Square and The Sunset House at the junction of North Circular Road and Summerhill Parade. There will be 800 garda on duty so avoid those areas for a stress free day.

    :)

I hear that Henman fella is looking good for wimbeldon this year.

As for the moral reason, you could argue that the british have a legitimate (roast) beef with the Germans after WW2, but you could also argue that it was britain who declared war on Germany and not the other way around.
Off to politics for that one though.

I reckon that for anyone who is bothered by those things, then they're watching too much British telly and reading British papers. Why look at them if they get on your nerves that much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,073 ✭✭✭✭Terry

A lot of those things are fairly unavoidable.
What if you have English friends?
Are you going to censor them?

Both are played when matches are in Ireland. Irelands call is a consession to the players and supporters from the north. The Irish anthem is not played when Ireland play away from home or in Ravenhill up north.

On another note I believe there will be some trouble tomorrow:( The papers and media have suceeeded in fanning the flames. Todays sun went so far as to tell the nation where RSF protestors are gathering and that there is building materials (like on O'Connells St last year) left on the street.

They also keep harping on about the signifigance of GSTQ being played in Croker while not mentioning it has been played there before.

This football match has been sucessfully hijacked by politics.

You don't have to read English papers or watch English telly, or 'own' media are slavish puppets of their masters in England.

The unfortunate reality is that Ireland is little more than a satellite of Britain. Most of the print media is English based and has a Oirish spin on current affairs, politics, etc..

Our high streets, TV stations and other media outlets are all rip offs of the English. Deep down I suspect that most Irish people like the fact that 'we' are so close. The notion that we are a free, independent state is a misnomer.

To paraphrase Connolly, 'you can wave the green flag over Dublin Castle tomorrow but England would still rule you by her banks and landlords'

I have seen some disgraceful scenes on Easter Sundays' past, in the City Centre. Events that never made the news, such as a bunch of foreign students being attacked in a pub ( one getting head butted ) by a group of lads sporting Republican colours ( they were not young lads either), they had just arrived back from the GPO, they decided it was time this foreign fellas went home to their own country, and they tried to persuade them. I know it maybe only be a small minority who act like this, but it shows you what can happen.

I Agree 100% with this post.

A good friend of mine said to me recently about the new estate he just moved into, "I might aswell be in Croydon, the only difference is the accent"

Just realised that this will be taking place in Dublin City Centre tomorrow -
    www.corribsos.com/index.php?id=401&event=1

Coincidence? Considering the Shinner involvement with this in the past, diverting Garda resources might be quite handy for anyone considering stirring it.

It's pretty irresponsible of the campaign to have this protest on the same day as this particular rugby match. What does anyone else think?

I recognise one of the women protesting in the pictures. She was earrested in Kildare a few years ago for membership of an illegal organisation. :D

They could at least try to get it right.

Given that the Germans killed and maimed over 100 people next door to Croke Park in 1941 and were responsible for the murder and oppression of hundreds of thousands of our largest minority group, we can only await with trepidation the playing of "Deutchland Uber Alles" there in October.

    Church of Ireland protestants?
